888|24 vs 882|20
« on: August 18, 2004, 05:55:42 PM »

Hey all

Just wondering:

How they compare. Just from a listening perspective. I am aware of some of the theory, just have never heard the 888|24s.

We are currently running a d24 system with 2 882|20s.

Since i have read on the forums that the 888|24s are fucking lambasted, we were wondering what converter to upgrade to and how. Bearing in mind that we have no AES/EBU, only spdif.

Thanks in advance

The 888/24 has better specs and is better sounding than the 882/20.  The older 882 ( as opposed to the 882/20) was really bad though, sounded like you had a lawn sprinkler running in the corner of your studio.

The best A/D D/A upgrade you could do to a pair of 882's would leave you able to do 4 in and 4 out at best.

I would think the best thing you could do to a pair of 882's would be to try slaving them to a better master clock and see if that improves things.
