« on: March 15, 2007, 12:17:22 PM »

Please could members give me an opinion on a Microtech Gefell 692 M93 mics. May be compare with a Shoeps or Sennheiser Omnis.

The use would be a main pair or tree for accoustic music.

Here’s what I found out.  It was a microphone manufacturer by Gefell after the wall went up in 1961.  When I checked out the huge “history of Gefell” pdf file they said it was between 1960 and 1989.  So I don’t have an exact date, but other internet sources list the initial manufacturing date somewhere around 1980.  This microphone was comprised of the MV692 body and the M93 omni capsule.  There was of course other capsules available.

I didn’t find any information concerning if any current Gefell mic is based upon this older design.  I also didn’t find any specifics as to the capsule or other components used.  I am e-mailing Gefell to see if they can provide us with additional information.  I will post my results as soon as I hear back from them.

Gefell was still making and selling the MV692 as well as the M93 capsule until recently, but they are phasing out the SMS system now.

SMS system? Please tell more. Did/ Do other manufactures use this standard? I am always thinking "What IF I could 'cross pollinate' mics and caps. Like put an AKG 451 cap on a Gefell body." Are all 692s SMS?
What can you tell us?

BLUE actually used to make an adapter to fit Gefell capsules onto 451 bodies but they stopped making those a long time ago and I've been looking for a used one or pair ever since.

Gefell was the only manufacturer using the SMS system and only Gefell capsuels will fit onto Gefell mic amp bodies.

Yes, the MV690,MV691 and MV692 are all SMS. I had a pair of the M582 tube mics modded to SMS specs so I can swap capsules onto them as well.

Not that I'm aware of, but it would be cool if someone did make something.

That is a great idea. We've got people cloning everything else.

Pearlman? Castoro? Anyone?

That idea woould probably not be very cost effective since there would only be a handfull of people buying it.

I would say send the MV690/691/692 body to a mic tech and simply get him to upgrade the FET and some capacitors ect.

There's also a tube amp for these capsules, the M582.
