I'm tire of weighting the bases of my wimpy stage mic stands.

For the heavy LDC mics like v-69 and U-87 etc, which of these stands are better?  If you have a better deal or product, links appreciated, I need 2 or 3.

The second one looks like the On Stage stands. I have a pair of these and you can't beat them for the price. But the "buy it now" price on ebay is $96 with $35 shipping? I paid $120 at Guitar-get...and had them that day...

The first set look like a pair of on-stage stands (different than the second set, obviously), and I would not recommend them, to be honest. I bought a pair of these from GC a couple of years ago, and they are really pretty cheap quality-wise. The legs fold out and are locked in place with small wing nuts, and the whole mechanism bends and gets twisted...pretty lame really.

They do work, but are probably not the best design.

The second set looks much better with the cast base design.

I bought one of the second stands there, and I can't possibly recommend it. It's not very easy to position, feels very cheap, and the wheels are really too small for the base design. (I suppose you could replace them).

Absolutely no replacement for the Atlas SB-36W. That's the stand you REALLY want.

The only less expensive one that I think is good is the "Quik Lok A-85". No wheels, just a large tripod base  (like a SR speaker stand), and a pretty sturdy boom arm that has 'teeth' (no when you tighten it, it STAYS). They have great reach and handle heavy mics fine. They're in the $100 or so ballpark.

The big On Stage ones I have stripped out eventually as well (the tightening bolt). I had to rig up some hardware store bolts for a minute before getting some good ones...

It's expensive but it's big, heavy and you'll never destroy it.  It is the Manley Labs version of the Starbird boom stand.  No, it's not for every microphone, but it has strength, flexibility and quality.  Check the Manley Labs site if you're interested.

I've got a set of the On Stage stands in the second link.  I've been very happy with them.  I also have a set of the big Quick Locks and I don't like them as much.  The big tripod is a pian in the ass.

Larch Lake Stands.
Not cheap, but will hold anything and take up less floor space than most heavy duty booms.
Just Google Larch Lake.
Lyn Fuston over at the 3D Audio Forum swears by them.

Sorry, I shoulda caught that; it's Latch Lake. Jeff Roberts makes the "mic King" which is a killer stand, built like a truck.  They don't slip and you can do chinups on the boom arm.  It's at:
