WOMP 3 - When???????
« on: June 18, 2005, 01:37:00 PM »

OK - finally got back my NTP 179-120's fully modded from the shop so I'm good to go with all secret weapons in place.  So...
Not to be a pain about this - but is WOMP-III going to happen?

To quote PE "I'm ready and I'm hyped and I'm amped"

From the looks of things I actually have a slow week coming up so this would be a great time to bang this thing out.  Post the file and let's go at it!!!

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Cool stuff - should be fun - thanks for your time in this Brad.

Can you tell us now who the track is from?

Best regards,
Steve Berson

OK, just polished off a little private analysis project for a guy at Telarc (amazing how much they got out of that old Soundstream stuff, but it does tend to be a leetle forward) and this month I'm the one good to go with all secret weapons in place. So...

...?

Long time lurker, first time poster..

I had an idea for the WOMP. It's pretty clear that Bob Katz and others of his ilk have some advantages that others do not.

Wouldn't it be cool to level the playing field and say:

You must master in x freeware audio editor, using only x freeware plugins.

I'd be so much more interested to see the ratio of car to driver.

Anyone think this is worth exploring?

we sort of did this already in the WIMP discussion where were only allowed to use prosumer gear, plugins finalizers etc

But did you limit it to a particular program and particular plug ins only?

It's just reminding me of the thing on Gearsultz.com where an engineer did  track that used only 57's and ART pres. How did it sound, beyond wildly good...

That one was a 'software under X$' one. There was a price limit. It wasn't about having to use a specific piece of software. I remember I couldn't use my in-house stuff because it's proprietary, and I had to content myself with 'Amadeus' and 'SoundHack' for lack of niftier software.

WOMP is so we can hear the big leaguers and THEIR toys, and hold that up as a bar. Last year Brad floored me by doing everything I wanted to do, sweeter and better. We've got a number of big leaguers again, and I don't want to hear how well they do limited to 'pro tools'. I want to hear what they REALLY do, and compete with that- because I have to anyway, these guys are not so unaffordable or unavailable as you might think.

I'm not doing a second WIMP (unless it's time for WIMP II). I want to put my science-project mayhem up against kilobucks of sweet gear and truly expert ears, and see what happens. If I can't do that, what is the point?

NO handicapping anybody. If some bigleaguer is going to hand me my head, I want to be able to examine the neatness of the slice so I know what's possible, what's out there.

Besides, be fair- the science project stuff is what I DO, it's not like I have any special gift for running Pro Tools or setting crappy EQs or Waves plugs. I don't _have_ any Waves plugs. My entries always sound pretty unique. I don't want to lose that as I improve.

Some ME's don't use plugs that much. Why would you want to take analog processors out of the equation? I'm quite sure that you could learn more from not limiting this type of exercise to a budget level and hearing the best that everyone can offer. This isn't a competition, it's an exercise to discuss our different techniques and results achieved from those differences. What works "best" for each person and why.

Bring it on, Brad!

This is a good time for me also. My setup has grown in some (for me anyway) interesting directions since II, and so has my mastering knowledge and experience - I'm keen to see what I can do and learn from the other entries.

Cool.

I can't wait to get in this, I had no real chance to go with the previous two, but this time I'm all in.
