6176 or LA-610?
« on: April 29, 2005, 06:54:21 PM »

I'm looking for a channel strip for my DAW for broadcast VO work and can't decide weither to get an LA-610 or 6176.  I have experience with an old Urei 1178 and like it, but the LA-610 has come out recently and is less expensive.  I have never used an LA-2.  My main voice talent can dish out a high SPL at times when doing some of the harder sell stuff.  any suggestions?

Hi there,

The limiter in the la610 is, by no stretch of the imagination, an LA2a.  I've used both the 6176 and the la610.  Go with the 6176.  You get what you pay for.

Many (but not all) users have complained about low headroom with this pre-amp

The 6176 version added a pad feature, but you might want to try before buying if dealing with a wide dynamic voice talent

The 610 is a "character" pre; not transparent by most folk's standards

Perhaps something a little cleaner, tone-wise, and quieter for v/o work?

Thanks for the info.  I'm not necessarily looking for totally transparent.  We have used a UA 2108 on the voice talent before and it works nicely although the input level setting is set at the lowest setting just before the hi-z settings. I also really like the idea of a simple channel strip recording everything to "tape".  Got any recommendations in the price range of a 610?
