Neumann KM84a from Japan
« on: April 03, 2024, 10:46:51 PM »

I bought 3 Neumann KM84a microphones from Japan over a period of several years. My understanding is that they were specifically made for a Japanese broadcaster that wanted transformerless electronics. Does anyone have information about these mics?

Hang tight: research directly from Neumann is on its way.

Hello,

true, 1996 saw a small issue of KM 84 A, special request of NHK Japan, with the electronics of the then new KM 184 (1993). Nice microphone, sitting somewhere in the small space between KM 84 and KM 184.
You find it also listed in the publicly available "Overview of microphones" on our website: https://www.neumann.com/de-de/downloads/  , search for "Overview".

Best regards,

Thank you for the information. It is interesting to have found a unique set of mics and to have bought three consecutive units over the course of a decade. I do prefer the KM 84 to the KM184 and always assumed it was the capsule but comparing the transformerless km84a makes it clear that both the electronics and capsule of the km84 contribute to the sound I prefer, and simply switching the capsule won’t give you a km84.
