you mean nobody is going to talk about Leona Helmsley?
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:53:03 PM »

This is a couple of days old, but I can't believe nobody mentioned it.  In a nut shell, the chauffer gets $100,000, her brother gets millions, two of her grand kids are cut out of the will, and the other two get $5 million, but have to visit their dead father's grave site each year, the bulk of the money goes to the Helmsley charities, but $12 million dollars goes into a trust for her dog.  Let's hope the dog doesn't decide to use some of that money to go after Michael Vick.

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

That's pretty Shih-Tzu of her but it will keep the dog in Chow-chow and a Cardigan.  The whole thing seems not very Pharaoh her.  But it's her money.

I'm happy.

if you sit around waiting for money from relatives, that is a shame, anyway.  there are 40 work hours in a week, and that is taking it easy American style.  Those kids need to get jobs, and make their own fortune.

The dog getting 12 mil shows us what a whack job she was anyway.

Nick, you speak the truth.  Stupid dog -- should go and get a job too instead of waiting on money from its owner.

Property cannot pass to an animal.

Now it looks like the State of New York will get that dough.

Not what LH would have wanted.

BTW, one of the former house workers has now sued the dog because it once bit her.

But money isn't property.

Are you sure?

Well, I was pretty sure of my answer based on some research, but having looked further I could be wrong.  I am amending the above post until I have all the details (and now plan to still be wrong!)

EDIT: An Update.

Money is considered to be personal property (by legal definition).

It is possible, as Leona Helmsley did, to leave money in trust for the care of an animal.  This is legal in New York.

This article from the Associated Press provides the details.

As the AP article says, not only is it legal in NY, but also in 39 other states -- and is growing in popularity among all economic groups.  People want their pets taken care of.

I'm not making out with my dog or anything, but if my children are half as rotten me an my siblings... well, the dog gets it all!

however, we do believe the dog is a genius.

She didn't leave the money to the dog.  She set up a $12 million trust to take care of the dog.
