One-Mic Bass AND Drums no budget!
« on: February 03, 2007, 01:19:47 PM »

hi,
We're making a few recordings of backing music to give to singing prospects. I have a few sounds I'd like to get some opinions and help on if you can.
I'll be adding the guitars later at home and mixing myself.

These were done with a beat up Behringer dynamic at our rehearsal space. Going into my VTB-1 and my RNC with super fast attack & release. There's a couple of these I like. My main issue is with the strident tones of the snare (and its wires).

If you can
these small raw files are here:
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2962&a lid=1170

Position 1- 6'4" overhead aimed down into a 3 foot space between bass amp and kit
Position 2 - 2 feet high aimed down, same relation to kit and amp
Position 3- 12 feet away, 6'4" high aimed between kit and amp
Position 4 - 6" off the floor, 2 feet away from kick, aiming at the bass amp

(position 4 was almost the best in terms of getting bass and taming the snare, but the kick OY!)

thanks if you can offer any postioning tips.
I'm going to bring in my condenser to try next weekend.
I assume a condenser will have more detail but are there some issues I could run into with this, as opposed to using a dynamic?

thanks ALOT
-Alan

I'd say position 2 will give you the best shot for adding more stuff.  It should work fine since it's not for anything critical.
