Works in progress - thread.
« on: August 13, 2006, 06:26:48 PM »

.

      The... "Works in progress thread".

This thread should be a great place for the intermediates and newcomers to post links of clips to projects their working on or are just trying different things etc...

It's for feedback mainly -

How can you improve it?

Is it translating well?

Does it sound good?

Does it sound worse than the mix?

ok, I'll put my head on the slate first!...

heres the mix>>>

and heres my test master>>>

and others feel free to upload tunes their working on too!

I like how you brought up the vocals so you can actually understand some of the words now compared to the mix.

Listening at home right now, so just my instant reaction: more umph in the low end, especially as the mids are up right now.

The mix is extremely lo-fi, especially the vocals. So tough job!

Thanks for the listen Holger,

Yeh, it was a basic "Home studio" set up the guy is using.

Think it was all done in Logic, but man I wish he'd change his Mic! Twisted Evil

Sounds like he used the Bitcrusher effect set to 8 bits on the vocals Smile

I think no amount of mastering can save that track!  Very Happy  But what I hear you did is a bit on the bright side to me.

Hi Ged,

quite good, but I thought there could be more in it.

Maybe you find this of interest:

Just trying to give you further ideas.

Thanks Norbert,

there seems to be too much compression or limiting on yours,
loads of pumping, a bit harsh at the top too
sorry Sad

Hey Ged,

I gave it a listen. Your revision sounds a lot better.
Think what you did with the top end and vocals is about all one can do, so hats off!
On my home system it seems you could still give it a bit more oomph.
Good job ged.

BTW I know it's not supposed to be your thread, so I'll try and post something as well soon...

i cannot get the original mix file (busy server), but here an fft analysis averaging data from 30 secs of your revision:
index.php/fa/3284/0/
100 hz? 200hz? 9k?  i think a curve more resembling "1/f" would be a respectable goal here.  my first impression on listening was this is the "100hz problem" you mentioned in a monitoring thread here. so i looked first there;  it sounds intentionally notched near 100hz. looks it too.  it's second order harmonic (200hz) seems like it was taken out with a grenade! (imo, plays vitally important role in shaping the body of the bass tone). also seems fully neutered below 50hz; perfect for a 1" laptop speaker?   top end sounds as filtered as it looks.
