+48volts oscillation
« on: April 14, 2006, 01:22:40 PM »

hello:
i was using my Earthworks TC30K in to a hamptone tube pre,
every so often it would start to oscillate. put out a tone. very loud. turn the phantom power off and it goes away. put the mic straight into the m-box using m box phantom power no prob. narrowed down to the hamptone. i havent opened it up yet but was hoping for some direction to start my search. is there anything commen with my problem ?

also the channels work fine with a dynamic

Hi

I had not heard of Hamptone amplifiers until I did a Goggle search and discovered that they were basically kits...

eg http://www.mojopie.com/hjfp2.html

If that's the case with your model you want to look very carefully over the quality of the soldering, particularly to the input XLR and the quality of the grounding to pin 1.

The problem with kits is where the builder might have used poetic licence over how the wires were positioned... particularly the proximity of input and output cables and connections.

This is just guessing on my part but instability with phantom power kind of points to a bad construction issue as it's usually pretty bullet proof.
