I would guess your best investment is going to be an Intel Mac (Macintel). They are faster (and if you wait will get faster yet again soon I think) than a regular Mac. And that's the direction it's all going so you won't be left in the dust as things change.
Once the dust settles a bit, you might just look at Digidesign's website for approved Mac laptops and basic system requirements.
