Has anybody ever used the 4033A? It's the hybrid ribbon and dynamic mic that was intended for soundstage recording, and I'm wondering if it has any musical applications beyond the 4038.

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The Internet enables pompous blowhards to interact with other pompous blowhards in a big circle jerk of pomposity." - Bill Maher

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

I've played with them as room mics, but I cannot say they ever really impressed me much.
and they're one of the few ribbons that i ever saw freak out at phantom power.
(probably incorrectly wired)

they LOOK well cool though {g}

Pardon me, especially as this is going to make me sound like a bit of a shit, but I am currently on a "crusade."  I am trying to get people to recognize that a ribbon microphone is also a dynamic microphone.  There are essentially two types of modern dynamic mics -- ribbon and moving coil.

Thank you! (stepping down from soapbox)

JJ,

Maybe you already know the history of this mic?  If so, sorry to be redundant.  If not, here's a link: www.roger.beckwith.btinternet.co.uk/bh/mics/4033.htm

What I find interesting is that it is STC's attempt at creating Harry F. Olson's multipattern ribbon microphone, which probably reached its zenith in the RCA 77DX.

I ALWAYS say "moving coil dynamic mic"...

...just good breeding, really.

now can we discuss "capacitor mic"? {g}
