I recently purchased a Neumann U87, and was wondering if one could tell when a Neumann mic was made with the serial number?
I have searched the archives and found nothing.

Please communicate the serial mumber and whether it is a U87 or U87A, and I will post the approximate month and year of shipment ex factory.

This is the closest surrounding dates to your U87 I can give you:

U87 #31628 was shipped on 06/05/1978
U87 #32473 was shipped on 09/29/1978

Hope that gives you a clue.

P.S.: Neumann offers precise dating if you send them an e-mail. Go to the Neumann Pinboard and find the check box "microphone dating".

It was a little hard for me to find that link on their site, so for all others that want to know their manufacture dates from Neumann... email the serial number to : man_date@neumann.com

My answer from them was this: The U 87 microphone with serial number 31926 was manufactured in April 1978.

You may recall my post on the AKG forum (this was before this forum existed):

AKG doe not keep records of its microphones by serial numbers. The staff has stated that repeadely.

The only way to find out approximately when your 414 was made is by inspecting it up close, looking at the specific features and at the date codes of some components.
