Trident Fleximix - P&G fader replacement question
« on: February 19, 2006, 12:43:36 PM »

So the dream has come true - A box has arrived with Penny & Giles drop in replacement faders for the Trident Fleximix.

As some may recall I was never a fan of the original Ruwedo faders.

The part number for the P&G is: PGF3020/D/M/----/A

It fits in perfectly - I was a little worried about the mounting brackets vs the screw heads on either end of the fader but turns out its OK,

I am a little confused about how to wire the new faders to the modules.

The new P&G have 4 wires:

Red
Yellow
Blue
Black

The original faders have 3 wires:

Red (in)
Blue (out)
Black (earth)

I have some spare modules that came with an old P&G type and they are wired:

Red (to the same point as orig. red)
Yellow (the same as orig. blue)
Blue 1 (to what I assume is an earth point on the PCB)
Blue 2 (same earth as orig)...

Anyone have a thought as to what to do with these new P&G?

I think I know what to do with the red & black wires,
I get a little confused about the blue & yellow

And especially with the old P&G where a wire (Blue 1)  is run to completely different point on the PCB,

Heres some pics,

Thnx in advance folks,

Old P&G fader (note Blue wire running to location on PCB - where the wire jumper resides in the previous photo)index.php/fa/2427/0/

New P&G faders (note how the original mounting bracket fits right over the top of the screw on the side - not even the tiniest bit of space in between. What a stroke of luck that fit!)

Hi Ryan,

All you have to do is to connect a multimeter in ohm settings onto the new P&G fader and find out which colour is the wiper, and which colours are the top and bottom pins.

Finding that is easy. If two wires show a fixed resistance value (which is equal to the fader resistance) then these are the top and bottom pins of the fader. I guess these are red and blue.

Then find the wiper. If above is the case then guaranteed yellow is the wiper as black is normally regarded as either ground or chasis.

So when you move the fader up if the resistance between the yellow (wiper) and blue are increasing then blue is the bottom pin which is the ground. And if the resistance between the yellow and red is decreasing then red is the input.

On the 3020's blue is low and black is the case.  Normally these would be tied together.  Red in the top of the fader (in) and yellow is the wiper (out).

BTW the 3200 series are a little different.  They have an additional green wire, which I think is called infinity cutoff, or something like that.  Normally it is connected to low, along with the blue wire.

Witness the joy!

28 channels of P&G glory..
(15 more to go when I add a 3rd console frame..waiting in the wings right now)..

For me this was really worth it because the stiff faders always really bugged me, I often do a lot of DIY 'flying faders' in the mix.

On the next round of installing I will use a Dremel tool and file off just a smidgen from the top of the screws on the P&G case.

2 things:

1) Am I out of my mind to think these new faders could improve the sound?
I swear I heard a noticable improvement in the overall clarity of the sound, more detail, more depth,
A/B-ing the P&G modules with Ruwedo fader modules before I swapped them out.
In my mind or real?

2) Thanks to all here who helped out with info!

Hi Ryan,

You may well be right. Faders do generate noise. If that was not the case then connecting simple trimpots in place of them would give the same result. But they don't.
