Welcome... this isn't "Gearslutz" where folks rationalize their previous gear purchases by saying ____ or ____ is "the best"... so if that's what you're looking for, you've come to the wrong place.

However... there are some really experienced engineers that hang here... so, if you could give us a bit more of an idea of what tools you have, what your goals might be, where those tools are falling short or the mark, etc., etc., etc. then we may very well be able to make something almost resembling an intelligent recommendation.

Hope I'm not coming off like a jag off... I'd really like to be of assistance for you but you'll need to provide information so we can give it a shot.

Peace.

no no no don't worry ^your answer is fine for me, and fisrt thank you for replying!!

... it's just that i can't listen to all the preamp i may like, so i'll check it like that. i don't want the better pre, i want one that suit me and that i will like the sound of it.

situation: drum and bass guitar player, played in several bands. then find out about live ableton. then started producing, then liking it, then noticing i have a feeling for all kind of instruments.

my music is NOT serious. i am a serious jazz drum player. i play with a suit, technical and shit like that. but when i record in my home, i play for fun. sometime, naked. wrong notes are appreciated, and people love it. it's all about fun. i still like having a good sound... sorry to speak so much about myself, but maybe it will help you help me... or something like that.

instruments are a warwick bass, an old gretsch, some vintage synth, a banjo, a guitar plenty of vintage effetcs (maestros g2 i love you)and voices.

set up: brauner anniversary mic, some fathead for drum OH, and some shure, then i have only a joemeek compressor sc1, a pcm 70 and one apogee rosetta. i wouldn't have more anyway. i am a musician.

and this shit¨ty mic pre.

i like sound that have something special in them,
so i was thinking about the calrecs 1061. i have heard good things about them, but that was like 4 years ago. since then, nothing, what now? could they hold the long run? i feel like those vintage stuff won't be there for ever, but  api's lunchboxes or others will, so i rather buy vintage now and "new" pre's after.

but i can be wrong with that, what do i know, just tell me if so. people say that calrec are like half neve half api, so it should perfetc as the only pre?

since maybe half of what i am doing is played and recorded, half is midi things found in live, like vintage drum machines or synth or noises, it can be colored. it won't be everywhere. just the recorded part.

i would give you my myspace, but there is nothing in there, i am waiting to get a decent pre to re-record some parts. so if you wait to listen to that to help me, and i wait that you help me to put music in there, it will take soemt time like eternity for example.

in short: caracters, special, not too tricky to set up cause i am NOt a sound engenier fellow. caracter might be a little on the harsh side, less on the fat round side.

soooooooooooorry for that long post but i felt it could help people.

again, just saying sorry also make this post longer. know whatcha mean?  and then just saying sorry for that last sentence will make this post longer. know whatcha mean? and then sss.

With what you've said [being a musician] I'd recommend something a bit less maintenance intensive than the vintage stuff you've mentioned.  The Calrec 1161 is a great sounding module... love them to death... but they do need quite a bit of attention from time to time and if you'd rather be recording than having stuff fixed I would suggest avoiding them.

I've found the Sebatron pre's to have a rather "vintage" vibe to them... I would think they'd be worth your consideration.  The Chandler stuff also has a "vintage" vibe to it with some new twists... I would recommend you consider those as well.

Your post wasn't long winded in the least... but it did help provide some basis for something along the lines of a recommendation.

If you'd like to get more specific with what you've tried and liked and what you've tried and haven't liked it may become a bit easier to get you an even more specific reply on my take [and maybe some of the other members of the forum's take] of what may very well work out for you.

Best of luck with all you do.

Peace.

so here is waht i think:
a) a lunchbox.

b) calrecs and i hope that they will not be a complicated thing at the end.

c) i eat pastas for two months and i get the calrecs and a single channels of great river for my vocal for example. i'll try to get this one from this christian missionary company that was great, because i feel really bad about taking their time and not being sure to order something from them. then i will be safer, and not putting this calrecs sound everywhere can maybe be smart too.

I'd pick "A" and a few, good, reliable units to go inside that "lunchbox".  Your mileage may vary.

Needless to say the Great River is a favorite of mine... but so is the Purple "Biz" and the Vintage Design pre for the 500 series frame.  The 1161's have a very nice sounding equalizer which could come in very handy... but it will still have 30 yr. old switches even if it's been refurbished [and switches are mechanical, they wear out, and that affects the tone of the unit].

The Purple "ODD" EQ's have a whole lot of "mojo", couple them with the "BIZ" and the "Action" compressor and you've got a hell of a working program [at least in my world... YMMV].

One Great River, a "Biz" [and/or the Vintage Design "581"], an "Action" and an "ODD" will still leave you one slot in a 6 slot "lunchbox" [or 5 slots in the Purple Audio "Sweet 10" frame]... which is the way I would go if I were trying to get a good, solid, reliable system that will afford you the opportunity to shape the sonics of your music for a reasonable amount of cash outlay and not a whole lot of struggle with the machines as you make your music.

Again, and as always, your mileage may vary.

Peace.

thanks for the detailed answer. i have to sleep a bit on it, since i decided i didn't want to spend the money for the calrce and a lunbox.

so it will be a single channel of whatever is safe, and the cal,

or the lunbox option.

yes i know, that safe thing approach is bothering me much.

i have been to the listeinig session, and damn...

the api and great river sound great, but so clean! too clean recording frighten mee. i hope you could get them sound dirtier, cause i love dirty music. energy...

people that listened to calrec, are they a bit dirtier? the way i want to play is dirty. it is a dirty job, has to be recorded dirty, otherweise it's all lies.
