Accurate indictment.  Fletcher, aren't you the one who started this pebble down the hill?

Seriously though, I had a guy bring in a strange catalog ('Music123'?) and ask me if he should buy this $150 'producers desk'.  I peered over and saw it was the exact same desk I had some gear stacked up on in the corner, except it had a 6 inch raised section added for speakers.

I bought that desk at Big Lots for $20.

The home studio has come a long way in 20 years, as has cluelessness and inexperience.

Maybe a video like this signals a high water mark?  God, please...God?

"Recording engineers are an arrogant bunch.
If you've spent most of your life with a few thousand dollars worth of musicians in the studio, making a decision every second and a half... and you and  they are going to have to live with it for the rest of your lives, you'll get pretty arrogant too.  It takes a certain amount of balls to do that... something around three"

I love giving engineers the response, "it depends".

They don't seem to like it at first though.

It's a fun way to get down to the details of where the weak link is.

Yeah, ya gotta love "it depends" [or my personal favorite "I dunno - what do you think?"]... its amazing to me that the more you learn the less you know in terms of "concrete truths"... like you start to take the 47,000+ variables into consideration when you're making what is inevitably a "game time" decision derived from the available weapons of mass confusion in the arsenal.

A) It depends = covering up inexperience

B) I dunno, what do you think?= I'm gonna listen to you waffle for a while then give you the REAL answer.

The experienced engineer CAN use A, but not the other way around...you'll shoot yourself in the foot...
