New U87
« on: July 04, 2008, 01:11:58 PM »

Is there anything I should know regarding the purchase of a new U87? Do the new ones pale in comparison to the gems of the past? Will I need to drop another few hundred bucks for a mod?
Thanks

That is unless you like the sound of the mic. I personally love the U87ai on my voice. It has that classic low mid character which many have loved for years. It has a transformer and adds weight to your voice and it has a nice top end without being silibant like many other mic's out there. I prefer it over the Blue Kiwi, and Brauner Phantom, so it really comes down to personal taste. Many here claim the mid range on the U87ai is not to their taste which is fine, but for me, it's one of the best solid state mic's I have ever heard.

the problem I have found with the newer K67 capsules (I had a new one) is that compared to the originals they have fare less reach and are peaky-sounding... in short the very old ones, if in shape are very good, and can be used to mic distant sources like strings etc..

I would not trust a new U87 to mic strings from a distance..

oh well..

Hi.
Keep in mind that you will have enough money to buy one. There was a discussion in the last two days regarding the U87 mic. All i can say is, that all vocalists which we had in the studio didn't like the U87 at all. So every time my "ears" were the first choice. I mean a C414 Comb with AKG brass ck12 capsule. So, for me it is not understandable why people are spending so much money for that mic. I spent 300 Euros (Than 1800 Euro for one U87.What's wrong)less for a "MATCHED" pair of c414 comb mics in really impressive condition. In my opinion you should save your money to buy an ELAM 251 clone.
