AKG C28, C60 & C61
« on: May 22, 2004, 05:43:48 PM »

Whats the story on these mics? They all use the same capsule (CK28)but different tubes (6072, AC701k, and Nuvistor 7586 respectivly).  One doesn't here much about these mics. I was wondering if they were any good or should be avoided at all costs. Klaus called the C61 infamous in a previous post. I was wondering why? Also any history on these mics would be interesting.

The C-28 is a small diaphragm condenser, kind of the daddy of the 451.  I have three, and I know that Lenny Kravitz has at least one, because I saw it in for repair when I was getting mine brought up to factory spec.

Someone mentioned Roy Orbison using either the 60 or the 61... I forget.

Anyway, I took one to the Benedum Center where we put it on an orchestral mix, using it on violins along with 460s and 480s.  We liked it better than the 460s or 480s, but it was a small difference.

I'm liking it along with a Neumann 84 for acoustic guitar micing.  The pair gives me a nice blend of tones.  I use it pretty much wherever I might have used my 451s or 460s.

I don't think that they are worth what they seem to be getting on the market, but I do like what they sound like.
