Title: best and worst things bought for $100 bucks
Post by: RickRhino on June 03, 2005, 05:19:08 PM
Best : Coleman Audio LS3 line level selector
really simple and very clean passive selector
no buyers remorse

Worst: Samson C-control
lots of cool features, but thin sounding and perhaps the noisiest
unit in my home setup

Best:

11" UFIP splash cymbal
SM-57
RDL in-line attenuator
Disk Warrior (Mac disk utility)

Worst:
Behringer "composer" compressors
Native Insturments "Dynamo" virtual instrument (that was a little more that $100, but still sucked none the less)
A few digital guitar tuners without a real needle.

My best:
A Monster HT700 power distribution box (8 AC outlets).  It made my audio equipment sound better; cleaner, deeper, and better bass.  I had to A-B test it several times because I couldn't believe it.

The best I've seen:
My friend got some Octava o12 mics at Guitar Center for some really low price.  He played me a recording of a grand piano he did using 4 of them.  It's great.  Big and beautiful. Apparently there are counterfeit Octava mics out there; don't know which he got.

For live sound the most useful piece of music gear I ever bought was:

a 2-wheeled cart!

My back still thanks me every time I look at my 18" subs!

Hm! I won't agree with you on that!
I have this cheapo and find it great. It's extremely quiet, invisible, and sounds great. I'd put it on my best list. Maybe you weren't lucky and got faulty unit!

My list of best would also include Ashly SC-52 and used MusicNet DA24 converter (well that one is maybe 50 bucks over $100 but hey...8 ch DA converter with wordclock for that price!)

Worst:
Belinea computer monitor - not really audio but it's the worst nightmare!
Behringer headphone distributor - sounds almost okay but when people start pressing buttons on it... man... I have to run back and forth from control room to studio to get it right for idiots!

Best:
> PROEL DB8CH active 8 channel DI box. Sounds transparent, all parts inside are first choice or renowned brands, flexible... 55 Euro.

> Pioneer A303R HiFi amplifier. Bought it used for 30 Euro and i'm using it as a headphone amp, besides having it wired to address several pieces of gear to my mixer (CD, MD, Cassette deck...) Sort of "the home system in the studio".
After a couple of months using it i discovered how great it sounds! Have been using it for years, never had a problem and still sounds amazing.

Worst:
Hummm... everything i bought for 100 was either worth the price or better.
I would have to say that my worst investment, ever, was a Mackie d8b. Now happily parked under the bed.
But it was far more than a hundred bucks.
And wasn't worth 20.
Does this count?

Also had a terrible top-of-the line Nokia cell phone that wasn't worth the money. It beeped sometimes so i guess this would be on-topic, no?

i have to add something here,
i once paid $122 including shipping (from US to europe) for a pair of DBX163x's and WOOOOOW that must be my best buy ever,
since that day i started looking for little cheap gems,
now i'm gonna try an ASHLY CL 50E , the sound i'm after is something fat, agressive is fine too,
if i get some more money i'm buying me another pair of 163x's,
and after that i'll get me a 160 but thats over this budget...

things i shouldnd't have bought:
aphex aural exciter 104 with big bottom, sold after a few months,
behringer quadgate, noisy, clicking, ticking, piece of ..
and now i got a

O.K.,, I got a BI=AMP Quad Limiter for $80.00 ?? I think? This thing is sort of noisy but, It will beat the living crap out of drums in a way that is just sick. Try a really high pitched 10" pork pie snare through one of these!! It's crazy sounding. Really cool.

It is now broken!! Damn it!! I know it's a POS but, it sure sounds crazy :-}

Right on with the 163-x units. I have two of them plus the OLD 163's {a pair} Plus the 263-X de-eser. These BDX boxes have a sound. I've gotten used to them. I love them.

I think it's fun to collect boxes that do strange things to audio and ,the cheaper, the better..

Where did you find a 609  black for $100?

What about the silver do you find bad? My buddy has done some pretty kick ass guitar tracks with one. I was thinking about picking one up for that purpose but would love another opinion.
