Title: I broke my SM57 body
Post by: danickstr on August 25, 2008, 04:52:41 PM
I was trying to avoid having to boil my SM57 lower body to remove a transformer, since I just ordered Oliver's tranny from Mercenary, and of course I got a bit heavy-handed and the crummy pot-metal crumbled into pieces.

I also yanked on the wires and tore them off, but no big deal, since I am replacing that xformer.

Is there a place that sells parts, or in my case, lower bodies, or should I just call Shure?

Shure is pretty good and reasonable about fixing their stuff.

I've probably got one you can have!   If it's just the basic SM-57 body, dark gray, with the tranny inside the "goop".  I'll look in my boneyard of "stuff ya' might use or need someday".  PM me if you want.

Thanks for offering to help.  I will send info.

The thread that will not die. Heh.

I still use mine for bottom of snare just about every time I track drums (and haven't mic'd a hi-hat in three years).

How the heck do you break an SM57 body? They seem almost indestructable.

One day, in the hot sun, on a dusty roof, you finally hit one too many nails.

I confess, it is a handy toolbelt item.

I broke mine at the thread ring, by bending the screwdriver too hard, apparently, while digging the goo-encrusted tranny from its sticky resting place.

Being totally ignorant I have to ask a dumb question--rather than remove the transformer from the SM57/58, why not just get the SM48 which doesn't have a transformer anyway? Oh, and it cost half as much as the others. Confused

Hmm, i wasn't aware of the 48 but it's of interest to me- I have an old (70's or early 80's) sm57 cartridge with no body to put it in.  Maybe I'll get a 48 & one of Oliver's trannys & bring it back to life.

Oliver's 57/58 transformer (also can work on many other dynamics) is really nice.
