Title: Question for digital mixer owners who also use a DAW
Post by: Glenn Bucci on January 06, 2005, 03:54:47 PM
My question for you digital mixer owners, is how to you use your digital mixer? Do you use it only as a controller, sum everything in the mixer by routing all your audio from your DAW or what???

Depends...

I have the ubiquitous d8b and Samplitude 7.23a with UAD goodies...

Tracking:

- Either exclusive with d8b, using internal or external preamps, or
- Use external pres with external AD conversion straight to DAW, cue monitoring and playback through mixer.

Mixing:

- Mix ITB, using d8b's SPDIF in as DA conversion to monitor
- Mix exclusively with d8b effects (not for some time now)
- Mix with dynamics and some EQ from Samp/VST/UAD, and time based effects from d8b internal (or external) effects.

There are some goofy situations with this, for one: Samp is essentially a stereo channel DAW, whereas the d8b is a mono channel device (although ver 7.23 seemed to provide a great workaround)...Samp has auto latency compensation, the mixer does not...manufacturer support for the mixer seems to have blown away...some others.  I don't do the controller stuff...no need.

Finances providing, the d8b will be sold this year and replaced with an analog board, some better AD DA, etc...

This what you had in mind?

It was an expensive learning device...
