Title: Single mix board construction vs. modular

Can you compare analog boards like Mackies, Yamaha RM-800, and other single board constructed consoles to vintage mixing consoles that are of modular construction with individual channel strips and so forth? Is there any difference in sound quality and performance? Which is better, if any?

The main difference is that with seperate modules, a single component failure doesn't take the entire board out of service, especially if you have spares.

On the negative side, modules mean connectors, and connectors mean potential fault points.

It's a complex manufacturing decision.  Modular boards (as Pat stated above) can keep going while you repair just that module, but it's more expensive to build and the extra connectors add another source of problems.

Single panel boards can offer greater value and more features, but at the cost of the whole board possibly going down.
