It worked for me (on a PC, I'm at my other job)...

I can't imagine why JJ would be pissed off by a few minutes of your mediocre recording of a mediocre band playing mediocre material.

After a 30 second scan I was simply bored.

Careful where you aim that thing.

I've made that very same mistake around these parts.

If it weren't for spoiled rich kids, a lot of good music would never have been recorded, going all the way back to Alan Lomax.

I'm not being personally defensive about this, but I always stand up for anybody who gets attacked along those lines, whether it be Nicolas or even Fletcher's old boss.  You can't fault anybody for the circumstances they are born into.  It's what they do with it.  My family members didn't teach me music theory, how to play, how to engineer, how to produce, etc.  I had to learn how to do that, and invest the time and practice.

Now, if somebody is a dilettante, then that can be fair game, I suppose.  But just because somebody's family has money, you can't fault them for taking advantage of that.

Now aside from whether or not Nicolas is a spoiled rich kid, the question is more whether or not is he any good at recording, and is the music he's recording worth a crap?

It's not my thing, and he's not great, but he's not terrible.  He shows some promise.  His taste in music is what loses me.  Whatever.  I'm glad he enjoys it.

You're right J.J.

My complaint has always been about time rather than possessions.

When I was a lower middle class kid coming up, my complaint was never that the rich kids had more gear or nicer gear than I did. It was that they had more time to get better at their craft... time that they didn't necessarily earn.

Or, as a friend of mine once put it, "the trouble with being poor is that it takes up all of your time."

Yes there are many people who have done many wondrous things with the fruit of their family tree. I was wrong for making that statement. The trolling, arrogance and pomposity of it all was too much after seeing that lame ass excuse for dance.

Daniel, I wouldn't make assumptions about what people do with their time, or how much of it they have.  Poverty is not the only hardship people can endure.  However, I admire anybody who overcame any disadvantages to live out their dreams, whether they be financial, physical, mental, or whatever.

My girlfriend was orphaned at 15, and wound up homeless, dealing drugs, etc.  Before that, things were pretty horrific, too.  She didn't have any advantages, but seemed to find plenty of time to learn her talents, which have given her three concurrently successful careers.  And I've never heard her snipe at spoiled rich kids, either.

Well, that's another thing entirely!

Look, I hate spoiled rich kids, too.  (I may be rich, but I don't consider myself spoiled.)  I just didn't think it was a fair shot to take at Nicolas.  There's so many other legitimate things to make fun of him for.

In my specific case, no assumption was necessary. Only observation. I actually got to speak to the rich kids at gigs every Friday and Saturday night. While I was at high school during the day and working 40 hours at night and on weekends, they were rehearsing. Not that I blamed them. Who wouldn't? That's exactly what I would have been doing if I didn't have to work. But if I didn't work, there would have been no gear to rehearse with, so it was a catch 22.

So, no assumptions here. I was friends with these kids. I knew how they spent their time... and I'm still friends with most of them.

Although one assumption I always assumed was safe was that the homeless had plenty of time on their hands.

I guess I'm fucked up, I thought it was interesting on a musical level... then again I like early "Mothers" stuff as well as Captain Beefheart.

I thought the percussion stuff didn't fill as much space as I would have thought it could, but what after seemed like an edit to another session the room sound changed and I liked the recording a hell of a lot better during the latter phases... totally dug the way the cymbals "shimmered" on the trap kit [geek shit I know, but that's kinda what I have to do - geek - which generally impedes my ability to listen to most commercial shit].

I found some music there that I will listen to again... perhaps even purchase for future examination [as I spend way to much time in cars these days]

Peace.

I don't see any relation to Zappa.  I certainly don't hear this band capable of a "Peaches En Regalia."

As has been discussed before regarding Zdrastvootie, and pretentious crap like this, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso became masters at their craft before they broke their subjects down into disfigured line drawings.  This is somebody who can only give us the latter, and doesn't have the talent for the former, such as somebody like Zappa.

Enough of this worship of people 10 years+ older than me!  The last ten years of popular music recordings have been absolutely horrible.  What?  Are you going to blame the record companies for not putting out good productions?  You don't take ANY responsibility for how bad it's been in the last ten years???  It's time to change the guard, and the way I see it only the new crowd who have navigated a value system through the trenches of post-modernism are equipped to bring back substance to music recording.  The 50+ generation is too alienated from this current cultural phenomenon to be able to contribute their PHENOMENAL talents to record productions, but they sure do design great gear.

Despite the title of your thread, JJ was not seemingly pissed off......did this disappoint you?
I had the impression that you, Nicholas were actually being regarded seriously in this thread and treated as such. My assumption is that you are picking up on this as well, and in order to maintain your stance within a paradigm that, to you is necessarily different to the likes of JJ and others you perceive as of the old guard, you have seen it necessary to re create the animosity that establishes for you a secure footing in your perception of post modern musical creativity. Assumptions are often false and mine may be......so may be yours.
False assumptions pave the way for prejudice.
Peace, angst or whatever works for you, there is not always a battle fought with the changing of the old guard to the new.

I didn't say Zappa - I said early "Mothers" -- big difference.  If its been awhile since you put on "Freak Out", give it a listen... one of my favorite records.  I also referenced Beefheart, which has some rather bizarre stuff going on [which in many ways appeals to me].

Neither here nor there, just a base comparison that struck me.

Sounds like early Royal Trux with a brooding art school kid babbling over it.

It's been done, no new ground here.

FWIW It's not that I don't get it, it's that I do get it and I know what it lacks.

I'm sure the kids might like it. Then again they might not dig it since cocaine has a different sonic trigger than what's going on here.

Vampire Weekend and Abba have much in common, all rich kid shit aside.

Nice.

I had a trio of blackface ADATs, followed by a trio of XT's... and everyone's favorite, the infamous BRC.

I haven't flipped over an ADAT and re-seated the drive belt in almost 12 years, and I'm still bitter about how often I had to do it.

By the time I finally got rid of my ADATs, I was so over it that I was literally buying VHS tapes at the local drugstore. They made me hate my job so much. I just didn't care anymore.

I would probably go as far to say that the last 25 years of popular music were questionable, but really we're talking about POP music and we're talking about the music, not the engineering right?

Maybe I'm missing something...

Last I checked big Nick, is that you're an up and coming engineer.  Engineering (AFAIC) is about the CRAFT and the SCIENCE first.  Your beef with most folks around here seems to be more about taste which to me is kinda missing the point... I let that kinda stuff get to me in my twenties (as a musician)  and it prevented me from learning a shit-ton about music and life.

I'm not going to talk shit about your record (i'm into shit far more out-there than that), but it sounds to me like you need to spend some time learning about the music making process (not just the engineering) in order for your production to grow.  Once you have a firm grasp on the whole deal, maybe people will appreciate your angle (which I think isn't all that bad IMO).

I'm all for opinions, and I think yours are totally fine, just make sure you can back it up!

Glad you guys liked it.  What a cool story, Mario.

When I got back from June's funeral, listened to it, heard the second verse, and started crying immediately.  There was not a dry eye in the room when we tracked it.  Johnny had just come out of a coma and was very ill, and Rodney Crowell's dad had just died.  Johnny and June were holding hands when they sang the last line.

It's technically not the best recording I've ever made, or technically the best mix, but it's the most emotional, and I'll always be proud that I captured THAT in the moment.

Bravo J.J.!!

You hit it right on.

The emotion just moved me. It's all that matters.

Actually when she saw your picture of Johnny, she said "Papa" and when she saw June said "Mama" (she's 2 1/2 and still refers to men as Papa and ladies as Mama) it was so cute.

All I could think was if I could have just as much happiness with my family as June & Johnny did...I'd be a rich man.

The thought never even crossed my mind where or how it was recorded.

Do you feel like sharing more stories and pictures of those sessions?
(perhaps a new thread or put some on you web site?)
I did see some video filmed outside the cottage. Did you film that?

It must've been magical...

This moved me to tears.

I second Mario's request for a thread on this JJ.  Other songs, pics, video... Anything that's online and can be linked to would be awesome.

This must have been a life-changing experience for you! Please share as much as you can.

Don't believe the movies!  They had their share of drama.  Some of it reads like a Nashvillian Shakespearian tragedy.

Maybe over in WW I'll start a thread about it, or if one of you guys does, I'll tell some stories.  Some interesting technical difficulties I had to overcome, with the black faced ADATs being the least of my problems.

This is true...like any family.

Well I figure you used a bunch of good mics and pres like API, Inward Connections, Neve...stuff like that makes ADAT's useable.

It would be interesting to have a look behind the scenes, how you got the call, what did you bring with you, setup, and most important what was is like working with real life legends.

So I'll post it in WW...

I actually heard all nine minutes of this piece with attention. There is no mediocrity in this music, especially if it's put in the right context. Perhaps it could turn out to be a section in a Rock Opera or a theatrical piece, who knows. Maybe some editing or rearrangement of both music and words for a suitable use along with other musical pieces. The sky is the limit. The idea is that there is something there and it has potential. This would never work on traditional pop music however, but again, there is a concept somewhere in there.

My problem is the mixing. The drums need to be bigger. More defined and with more impact. Starting with the kick, and also more snare, and certainly a more prominent bass guitar. For example: the left electric guitar at 7:08 is a bit too loud. It does sound good in some sections with (in my opinion) the correct level,  but for the most part, compression is needed to control amplitude. That's just another observation. However, if this is supposed to be a demo, then don't even pay attention to my comments.

Bottom line, Breathe, continue your musical journey regardless of what people say. I know I did.

Take care,

Edward.

I'll just toss in that 'Here, My Dear' is one of the most magical albums ever, definitely one of Marvin Gaye's top 3.  My favorite.

How's that for steering the thread back on course?

Go listen to this record if you really want to know what the studio and a great singer can do.

Sorry, was joking.  I started a thread over in whatever works for info about Marvin's studio, etc...

I've had about 5 interns that sound like breathe.  They last about 2 hours before their opinions start spouting. They are asked to leave.

It's tough to seperate the objective job from the material when you're an angry young man.  If you're interviewing an intern and he wants to list his favorite bands, you have a problem child.

My best intern ever would never say a word about the bands he prefered, nor any band.  Tom Gloady.  He partly engineered the last Sigur Ros record.  Then there were the opinionated, didn't make it long as intern guys, who went out and formed bands.

I'm all for opinions, and I think yours are totally fine, just make sure you can back it up!

agreed.

Tho this thread might've turned out differently if the title was less confrontational, I think the music posted by Breathe is as valid as any non-"popular" recording. It reminds me of a variety of many art-rock bands - 'good' or 'bad' lies strictly on your personal taste, and we all know there is no accounting for taste in music and it's fans.

I know Nicholas invited debate at the onset of this thread, and even if he retracted his initial stance towards JJ, it seems inviting mayhem is his manner. That is fine, tho as mentioned by others, might not be the best approach to gain popularity with what you choose to record and how to present it - esp. in a forum of engineers...

A modicum of respect and willingness to learn often seems to be lost in the current crop of AE's: oh well, tough titty - it's Fletcher's forum, and he can run the show how he wishes. Suffice to say, I extend my appreciation of non-commercial music with what Nicholas chooses to record, but his lack of tact and inability to 'grow' when amongst such esteemed company often has me scratch my head. I sure miss seeing that dancing video tho - shame it's been pulled from YouTube - I wonder why?!?

Happy Holidays, and a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year to all!

Keep it up Nicholas!  (and forum)

Happy New Year!

Hi Bubba,

There is an improvement in that I can make out what is going on better, between the last piece, and this latest one.

So far, there's been a track from Nicholas that nobody really likes or dislikes, a half-arsed row about Rod Stewart which we can't even read, some tears and nice anecdotes about Johnny Cash and now everybody's friends again!

Apparently, Nicholas has mellowed out because he's learned something and JJ's mellowed because he's over 40 and loves his missis.

You are not the first to bring this up!!!  My exclamation points are kind of like Pat Metheney- at first it seems annoying and weird, but after a while you actually begin to like it, then eventually you begin to LOVE it!!!

Honestly, Ive always had a little bit of a stutter- thats where my name comes from (b-b-b-bryan got shortened to Bubba.)  So maybe i'm compensating for that sub-conciously, I cant really explain it.   But will do my best to contain the madness!!

There is a master plan here, and yes I just pulled the speech impedement card!!!     Wink

Ive seen him live a bunch of times on mushrooms, thats definitely a good time. I met him once, him and Lyle Mays are really great guys. I do get tired of it and go in and out of phases, but I'm like that will all styles of music.   If its a persons bag or not, you really cant deny the complexities of his rhythm and solos, Jaco sure thought he was good enough to jam with!!

I do love hard/dark music too!!

I'm predicting the Fletcher/Metheny collaboration album of 2016 which will spark the hard/dark jazz revolution!!    Bikers and yuppies will join forces for a whole new Metal Jazz movement!! It could happen!!Smile
