Title: Cool cheap gear.
Post by: meverylame on April 28, 2004, 02:40:10 PM
In the spirit of the threads on the old forums. What's cool cheap gear you've been digging on?

If remember right the last list was something like this
Compression:
Ashly SC50
DBX 164
Art Pro VLA toob
Urei LA-12
And of course the FMR RNC

Pre amp:
Presonus MP 20
Bellari 220
Ampex 350

What are you guys finding? Include anything pres/fx/comp/eq/etc.

All of my gear is cheap!

I really like endorphin and BLOCKFISH from http://digitalfishphones.com/ for being free I get a lot of use out of them.

I've got a Squier Bronco bass that I put a humbucker from a Les Paul in. It gets used quite a bit. It's weird to play because it's short scale and it ends up sounding like a dull P-Bass. Really neat sound.

I get the most mileage out of Oktava MK012s and MK319s. I think I could reasonably do an entire project with one of them.

Yeah Oktava stuff is great for the money. I've got a set of 012's and a set 219's. Which incidentally the 219s will frequently sound than my baby bottle on vox.

AT 4040 and Ampex 600 pre.

Both probably in the $200-300 range, but don't disappoint in the long run.

Digitech GSP 5 -- grainy and evil sounding, in a good way. In it's intended form as a guitar processor it sucks. Try it on other stuff and you might like it.

Still love and use the Boss SE-50.
Behringer Edison (no.....really)
Little Smokey guitar amp
I'll second the Ashly SC-50. I have the SC-55 stereo version, very cool but a little noisy. Used to get constant usage.
I'll also add the Ashly SC-40. Very underrated unit IMO.
The blue over black faced units for sure. I have a black faced one that just doesn't cut it. I don't know what they changed but it was a change for the worse IMO.

Yep that's what it is. Since we were talking ashly I figured I throw it in. Underated IMO for on the cheap. 4 unbal outputs, FX loop, bal mic out. Many still in use.

Hint: you've had one staring you in the face the last few times you've been in studio.

I'll second the presonus MP20... cool, weird, useable on a lot of things...

API 512c modules (c'mon at $500 a pop they ARE cheap)
Zoom RFX-2000 (I call it the "Destroyer of Sounds" good if you need to mess up things pretty badly)
Boss RPS-10 (Just feed something through and watch it mess up everything as a pitch shifter... it's... unique Very Happy)
Safe Sound Audio P1 (Very cool preamp, borderline genius design... seriously)
DAV BG-1 (Great little pre, I prefer the rackmountable BG-2 but it's three times the price)
Ashly SC-50

Peavey VCL2 tube comp/limiter. Companion piece to the VMP mic pre. Only bad feature is the name "Peavey". Maybe I can cover the name with duct tape.  JP

i've always wondered if those peavey comps were any good.

I feel the same way about my Peavey Companion 15 amp.

It's small and battery powered amp (8 D cells) and it sounds really  good.  The only problem was having to see the Peavey name.  Instead of covering the name w/duct tape, I built an oak box w/a cane speaker grille for it (ala Mesa Boogie).

haha nothing wrong with the peavey name... except for that god awful logo, but the classic series amps are simply amazing for their price.

Symetrix 501 Comp/Limiter
Love it on bass and gtr amps and great for vocals you need out front.  I traded for mine but I hear that you can pick em up pretty cheap.  Way better than cheap dbx and behringer stuff.

I just picked up an Electrix Filter Queen.  It's pretty fun so far.  I think it's gonna be key for a few thing on the record I'm working on now.  It does really cool things to piano. Very Happy
