Monsanto is playing a very dangerous game.  The elimination of genetic diversity in crops may eventually spell doom for agriculture and even human persistence on this planet.  While it is easy to condemn them for their business practices, the real condemnation should be reserved for their bio-exploitation and reckless meddling with critical biological systems they do not fully understand in the name of quick profit.

I love it!!

But you know, you shouldn't say that about Colorado.  You might hurt their feelings.  Unless you mean Oklahoma, in which case I'd agree.

And you don't know of their tactics in other countries. In other countries, their seed only germinates ONCE, and their offspring (the crop) produces infertile seeds. So you HAVE to buy their seeds. And since they have government contracts, there is NO other brand to choose from.

In Mexico, for example, Monsanto hires local government officials, and also hires guns.

If you do not buy their seeds, and sign their use and confidentiality agreements :

a. They take over your land illegally. This they do with the help of the local law enforcement, which is usually very corruptible,and leaves the local farmers with no recourse at all.

b. Kill you. This is done regularly with illiterate farmers who do not understand nor comply. Usually you will be buried right in the land you used to own. Afterwards, whoever is left of your family, usually signs over the land, or face the same fate.

My father took on this in the 80s, and won a few cases against them, and others like Pepsi, which had done this tactic in the state of Chiapas ( home to Comdr. Marcos, among others.) in order to secure enough land to grow sugar cane for Pepsi.

At some point, President Zedillo had to finally let the big corporate guys to back off a little. So now there is less killing going on, but the takeovers continue. Oh, and the media was shut up, as part of the agreement with the Mexican government.

Ah, the wonders of greed and capitalism.
