Title: Headley Grange / Zeppelin ...
Post by: vernier on March 13, 2006, 11:15:02 PM
Any stories besides "When the Levee Breaks"?
And anyone know what gear was in the mobile truck?

There's an article on the web somewhere about someone who paid a visit to Headley Grange recently. It was only last year that I actually realised where it was and realised that I probably cycled past there as a youngster while Zep would have been in there recording.

Cheers

James.

From what I've read/heard, in the Rolling Stones Mobile truck, they had a helios console and a 3M M56 2" 16 track or maybe it was still the 1" 8 track at that time. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Also lots of stories about amps in fireplaces and outside recordings.

Looking at some album credits, Zep used the Rolling Stones truck at Stargroves. For the Headly Grange recordings (many of which are on Physical Graffiti) they used "Ronnie Lane's mobile studio". Ronnie Lane was in the Small Faces, and he built a mobile rig from an Airstream trailer (yes, the AMERICAN silver bullet trailer--he must of had it shipped to the UK). A lot of bands used his trailer for mobile work. I know, because owning a mobile rig built from an Airstream myself, I found a small bit of info on his rig. I was totally surprised to make the discovery, I thought I was the only one clever enough to turn an Airstream into a control room! Very Happy I wish I knew more about his setup. If anyone knows about Ronnie Lane's rig, please let us know!

Also, if anyone cares to use my rig and record Led Zeppelin style at your favorite mansion: www.eartotheground.com

Here's a shot of Ronnie Lane's rig, on one of his album covers:

I think it had a Helios desk built in, and it's located somewhere up in Canada now...

Which one? The Stones truck or Ronnie Lane's? I knew the Stones truck had the Helios, but I thought that truck was long since dismantled.

There's some thread over at GS where Fletcher talks about how part of one of those trucks (I think it's the RS one) is at his house holding up a cord of firewood or something appropriate like that.

Ashes to ashes, and all that.

My tech worked on the restore of Rolling Stones Mobile.  It had (by that time) 2 3M M79 24-traacks with the 14' reel mod as well as his mods to the electronics.  The Helios was still in the truck.  I don't remember much of what he said the outboard was.  The truck was in business in NY for a bit and then sold to somebody in Canada ho had it in a warehouse.  Supposedly the guy was going to have some kind of museum, with tons of old synths and the RSM truck.

The truck is still in Calgary, I drove it up here from New Jersey and the Console is still installed in the truck and funcitoning just fine! Sounds great but the old DAF motor is getting tired and will have to be replaced someday.

The Rolling Stones Mobile was purchased @ auction n England and brought back to the states for restoration about 8-10years ago. I was the tech that spec'd the truck in England and did some repairs and a few gigs w/ it in the NYC area before it was sold off to someone in Canada. The Helios in the truck ran off 48V rails. It had an ingenious switchover unit that would allow it to run off the (2) truck batteries for about 5-6 hrs during power failure. There were (2) M79s which were restored by a tech in Ga. i think. There where also (2) 24trk dolby units normalled to the machines, one of which was missing the control card. Too bad, I found an extra control card in a lot I bought here in NYC. There was also A couple of bel flangers LA-2As DBX 160 VUs and such in it. Who knows what changes had been made over time. The Helios was restored mainly by Ken McKim, currently of Allaire studios, up in Phoenicia NY. I assisted w/ some of the work. technically the truck was a bit of a nightmare by the late 90s. We did a show @ the Tibetan fest @ RFK stadium in DC. the truck had to be towed there as the engine, as previously described, was on its way out. the master feed did sound pretty amazing, however, the output of the trucks AV feed were set to British broadcast level +10 or something. It was blowing out the broadcast trucks inputs whooooooops. there where many good stories over the years regarding the mobile. We added a few new ones before and after it reached US soil.

hey jeff, did the helios still have the ADR F700 limiters in it?

The ADR 700's were sold off separately, along with the mics and nearly all of the processing gear. Those specific comps are now here: http://www.audities.org/audities/collection/helios_sidecar_1 .html

There were 3 in total, the 3rd is in another rack...and they do have a different sound than our F760's. The Bel flanger that was used on Kashmir is still in the Mobile.

Here's a cool link on the Rolling Stones Remote Truck!

http://www.arcavitsystems.com/mobile/the_van_p.asp

Also I was setting up an Otari 100A for some Waylon Jennings Transfers and some of the concerts had been recorded by the Stones Truck. The crazy thing was the Tape baking was BLUE!! Like M79 blue. Any idea what the story is on that?

I've got a few reels with blue backing - I think they came on EMI spools but they could possibly be Zonal.

Scotch 263, which was used by the BBC for a while, had a light green back coating.

Cheers

James.

Dear James,
You are right the green 263 made by 3M’s,  was used by the BBC,  purposely to archive recordings made for BBC3’s Classical Music Programs due to its low print through spec.

EMI brought out a brown tape if I remember correctly it was called 816
Agfa brought out a Low Print through Pink Tape = PE something.

I do have a complete article from Racal expressing how the turn rust into recording tape (If someone requires it)

The blue 888 Tape made by Racal Zonal, this tape was designed to compete against Ampex 456,  it claimed to require exactly the same bias set-up etc, making it very simple to use this tape at half the price without having to re-calibrate your tape machine.

I was using a lot of 456 at the time mainly for the Pro-Artists who could afford it, but it would be nice to have a tape costing half the price for the local bands doing demos.
The Racal sales guy dropped off two reels for me to try.

I checked it out and sure enough the set-up was identical, the only thing I could find wrong, was the hiss levels were higher.
On further checks I realised that it was the blue backing running against the fixed posts on the Ampex MM1200, making this hissy mechanical noise, and having the tape machine in the centre of my monitors it was unacceptable.

A couple of weeks past and Racal called to ask me my thoughts, I replied that I was pleased with the tape, they then asked
"We have not received an order from you yet"
I replied no you wont for a while let me explain"
As it is also the same price as a small reel of leader tape, and yet 3 times longer I have decided to continue to use it as
"Blue Leader Tape".

Best Regards

Tony

On this trip the Stones Mobile used Ampex 406 & 407.
I often wonder what the Russians thought of Mick specifying USA Tape.

But, the song Kashmir used an Eventide "Instant Phaser" on the drums, not a flanger.
