Title: Retro Sta Level
Post by: Ross Hogarth on September 08, 2008, 11:05:04 AM
Ok
i'll post ...only if you don't spank me

I had been hearing a lot about how great Phil Moore's Retro Sta Level was
While at the PotLuck Con, I had a chance to fiddle with it
I really liked what I heard
since I am always about a piece of gear that adds something I don't have in any other piece of gear I decided to put one in the studio to try
I have used many a sta level in my day but something about the new one is more crisp and defined
I have been using it now for a couple of months and I am super pleased
on bass it is the holy grail
it has all the right attributes for bass
the ability to alter the release for the song
and
the ability to compress it just right
on vocals it has a very big sound
you will need to make sure that the vocal does not have too much bottom because this compressor will definitely pump up the whole size and girth
all in all I am super happy with this piece of gear
I only wish I had a few more ....

Thanks for posting this review.  I've read good things about this as well, especially for vocals.  It is nice to see the opinion of someone not being paid to write a review confirm what I have already read. Looks like my next compressor purchase.

Yes,Love my Retro Sta's
Now Ross go try the Retro 176's.Basically a quieter slightly cleaner[honestly in a good way],way more flexible version of the UA 176
And size and girth?
Oh yes,you bet.
on everything that passes through it.
Great stuff on pretty much everything.
Sold a great old LA2A to get another one..

Can anyone who has used this unit say which tubes it had fitted?

Apparently the 'regular' version uses 6386 and the 'Gold' has 6BJ6 ...

I am interested to hear opinions of the sonic differences, if any, between the two.

A friend of mine suggested he was going to get a Sta-Level a few weeks ago. Partly after reading Ross's review here I encouraged him!

When he took delivery I borrowed it for a few days and immediately saw the truth in Ross's statement about gear that does things nothing else in the room does.

So much so that I then had to get my own Sta-Level and I have to agree with all the positive comments here and elsewhere - beautiful on bass and when it's right, amazing on vocals. Also fun to try on just about anything else, to see if that particualr colour is beneficial. A winner.

I have one too. Not a retro one...a vintage one and I love it.

Just wondering, how does this unit sound on acoustic guitar? I presume the attack times also vary between it's single, double and triple modes, is this correct? Any help would be appreciated I am considering purchasing one.
