Ok...should have come here first to ask but no...I'm a putz
I am a VoiceOver dude with my own one room studio...vocal booth
sectioned off in one corner, computer monitor, Alesis MkII monitors basically in the front third of the room, facing the long way...
Everything rigged through a Mackie 1202...Alesis monitors rigged up to the control room outs, and headphones thru the headphone out...
One fader on the Mackie "control room" controls both the monitors and the headphones...
The monitors have to be switched off when tracking, and then switched back on again and the mic turned down to listen back...
Is there an inexpensive device available that I could patch between the Mackie and the studio monitors that would allow me to eliminate switching the monitors off when I track and basically just turn them down??? inexpensive yet noise free??

An L pad would do it if you want to turn them down. If you want to simply shut them off, a double pole, double throw, switch would do it. Either method is pretty cheap.

It's already on your Mackie. Set up your listenback on the Alt 3/4 bus and just use that as your mute.

set up the listenback on the alt 3-4 bus...
the alt 3-4 bus button in the source section on or off, had no effect on the listenback..it constantly stayed on...
the only thing that worked was setting up the listenback on the main outs..and then engaging the main button on or off....
would rather use the alt 3-4 button as you suggested...but
can't figure out what I'm going wrong...

hmmm...so you're saying that you muted the listenback channels on the board (which automatically sends them to ALT 3/4), then assigned ALT 3/4 to your Control Room output, and used the control room output source button to route those channels? I think that should do it for you...unless I'm really missing something here (which is possible...I haven't touched a 1202 in years...I was going off the PDF manual at Mackie's website).
