Title: Mr. Albini, re: Orestes Delatorre + Umber
Post by: max cooper on March 25, 2006, 11:27:28 PM
The album "Umber" by Bitch Magnet contains some of the coolest rock drumming I've heard.

Any word on what Orestes Delatorre is up to?

I know he did a record with Walt Mink, but I don't think the drumming was as integral to Walt Mink's sound as it was to Bitch Magnet's.

Also I'd be grateful for any info or thoughts on that record.

Many thanks.  The guy's a monster drummer in my book, and "Umber" is a great record.

I may have listened to it hundreds of times.

Max, I am no expert on all things Orestes and have actually only met him once but through the coincidence of my having briefly attended Oberlin College in the early 80's (the launching pad of the Del Fuegos and Chris Brokaw during my era as well as Bitch Magnet and countless others later on) and my friendship with Walt Mink, I wound up putting John from Walt Mink in touch with Orestes when they were between drummers and wishing they could find an "Orestes - style" drummer. My memory of Orestes was of a man with extremely limited patience for bullshit in general and music and art related bullshit in particular. When I tracked him down he was ensconced in a decidedly non music industry lifestyle. While he was playing locally with a band, he had a job with the Dep't of Forestry (if memory serves) and seemed in no great hurry to rush into a higher profile music gig. While Walt Mink did get him on  board, in general those kinds of tendencies tend not to lessen as one gets older. He seemed to be a pretty smart and talented guy all around. I'd be curious to hear what he's up to, I wouldn't be suprised if it's non-musical for the most part.
Hope this was informative on some level.

Larry, I appreciate you chiming in here.

On occasion I've entertained the notion of looking Orestes up to do some mercenary drum work, but OTOH I think that what I find really interesting about his playing isn't something that can be worked into a song in a day or two.

And there's no way to know if he'd entertain the notion at all.

Or would be findable.

Thanks for the info, again!

Umber is a really nice record, especially the track "Joan of Arc".  I sure wish there had been more albums.

Orestes lives here in Tucson, attending the U of A and working on a Ph. D. in geology.  A friend did a live sound gig (not a club rock thing) where Orestes was the drummer so he's still playing a bit.

Orestes is a cool guy and terriffic, powerful drummer. His nickname was "Toast" when I met him. Toast. What an underrated food.

He must've been a big influence on Tar!

It's an excellent surface on which to place other underrated foods, like marmalade, or peanut butter. I'd stay clear of Tar on toast.

Oh man, consider yourself lucky to have seen that guy play. It's great that someone is actually talking about this. For years I've marveled at that guys drumming. Joan Of Arc is untouchable. Truly an unsung hero of the music world.

Most really inventive musicians share this trait. Fannies go for it.
