Title: Most orgasmic bass DI setup?
Post by: breathe on January 12, 2011, 02:33:01 PM
Any suggestions?  Demeter Tube Direct going into Great River MP-500NV sounds pretty awesome, but I'd like more tools to sculpt the sound.  Manley Vox Box?  How's the D.W. Fearn VT-3?  Little Labs Multi-Z?  I am totally not into mic'd bass amps right now.

Recently tracked Bass through a Reddi Tube DI into a TSL-3 VAC RAC. Great!

Just so we're clear, you're asking what kind of bass rig is the best for inducing orgasm in female audience members? A good loud one, I would say.

If you want the most orgasmic Direct Input, you need to get the hard bone nut of a mammoth/walrus/40 yr old camel, then have a good guy stick it in for you!!!! Stay away from the long plastic one you use on a nightly basis!!  You will be nice and happy!!!

Bass  -  line amp  -  limiter -  ADC.

Maybe not orgasmic, but definitely organic.

Yeah, plus one fer the Woolly Mammoth, it’s absolutely the most insane sounding thing. And since I got my REDDI DI, I don’t feel so bad when I can’t mic my amp. Which is usually the preferred method.

I could see that setup sounding boring if the player is boring.

IME orgasmic tone comes from the player not the little box with wires coming out of it.

The best bass tones I've gotten have been with phenomenal players who knew their listening environment.

Every time I've had to rely on a box of some sort to bridge the tone gap, the results have definitely not been "orgasmic."

Man, it SO depends on the song.

I've had stellar results with a Jazz Bass > B-15.
Or a hollow-body Epiphone directly into an LA2A.
Totally different sounds, but both great for the songs in question.

But it really does all start with the player.

The song, the player, the instrument in that order. If you have those three ingredients and can't get a good bass sound, then you can't get a good bass sound.

I have a freshly restored B15, a GK 800, a Good Bassman, an SWR 900, a Trace Elliot compressor, A Yamaha Bass preamp.....

Lately, A Lawson DI into a Dynamic just a touch of EQ to taste to tape is working on many genres.....

I have some Bass equipment for sale! just too much.

Left-field suggestion for those with 200-series racks.  The 205L seems to be under-buzzed, IMO.  Sounds big, has a great thin <-> fat control.

If you can find one, the SVT DI is very nice.

I don't know if anyone can find Bruce anymore [someone PM'ed me recently looking for him]... but the Eclair Engineering "Evil Twin" was the best [as in clearest / largest] sounding bass DI I had ever used.  My second favorite was the TAB-funkwerk V-71 - and when it worked it was great [really great] but reliability was never its strong suit.

Other than that - sometimes a Palmer unit on the output of an amp head is just what the Dr. ordered.  The DI section of the Great River MP-2NV [or ME-1NV] is great too... but you kinda need the bass player playing in the control room for that one.

As always... YMMV.

Peace.

Bruce is still around I bought two units off him last year.  I always tout these as the best because they are the best commercially available bass DI's.  The REDDI and Retrospec being a very very close second.

The Evil Twins are the best... except for my custom ones built off of Langevin 201A tube pre's... similar to the TAB units you're are talking about Fletcher. I should get one from Oliver to test when he ships my U73 compressors.

Bass guitar and tube DI's go hand in hand IMHO.

For orgasmic bass tones, try these together:

I found two points of contact for Eclair Engineering - which is how to find an "Evil Twin"... eclairengineering@verizon.net and eviltwin@markfrink.com

Hope this is of some assistance.

Peace.

I contacted him re the Evil Twin and he replied that he no longer wanted to build them and was onto other projects.

Bummer - they are awesome.  I don't know if you can find one second hand or not... but it would certainly be worth it to try!!!

The Retrospec "Juice Box" is a pretty cool tool, and a not too distant second in my world.

Peace.

When you got John Pattitucci or Brian Bromberg playing, it's never boring. Boring is a rock player playing root 1/4 notes.

I don't use amps to record electric bass anymore. They never have the fundamentals right, (it's the octave above you are hearing) and they are never even. There's always resonances and hot notes, then buried notes. You have to use a compressor to even that stuff out but there's still no fundamental.

I normally would agree with this in theory, and sometimes prefer other methods anyway.

But recently I was recording a group wherein the bass player insisted on only using an amp (won't say which we used, until I find me one, ha ha).

The notes were indeed uneven, with resonances, etc.

But after much Protools work, evening out levels, compression, etc, I absolutely LOVE the final bass sound. It is not deep (fundamental laden), but it is powerful and sparkles, and is easily heard everywhere on the album, much like some "old days" classics.  And lets the bass drum take those fundamental freqs.

(It all depends on the bass, but...)

A REDDI into a Pacifica gives up some great results for a blues, MoTown kind of thing.  For country, I'm liking the bass into a Yamaha Nathan East passive EQ/Countryman DI/API...For harder rock, I'm still digging a mic or 2 in front of an SVT cab.

That's this week.
