Aha! An unforeseen side effect.

Hopefully our suppliers warehouse is so full of TY discs that we'll never notice an interruption.

Assuming that TY resumes production...

Thanks for the heads up Thomas.

Just ordered another batch of TY silvers a few weeks ago and looking back on my records was stunned that I hadn't ordered since April of '10 (typically stock about 4-6 months) - really made me realize just how rarely I'm cutting physical refs or masters anymore...

yeah, i only ordered 100 last dec (usually order 200, which lasts 6-8 mo) and i still have 50left!

last week, attended session, instead of cutting ref CDRs, i made a DDP, put it on a thumb drive with my sonoris DDP player.

first time i gave a "physical" ref like that.
and i liked it

We'll be buying extra spindles of TY discs next week, to carry us through any possible interruption in production. Still making many hard copies, both refs and Masters.

We've seen a reduction in requests for physical discs ~20% but most like to have a couple, even if only as a backup. A few years ago clients might want 5 refs for approval, perhaps now it's one or two.

Something about a tangible hard copy in hand...

Just checked - I have two spindles of 100 which will keep me going for ages. Like jdg I hope to be joining the DDP Player ref. fraternity soon.

We've been doing this for a while now and it's growing: it used to be just international clients, but now even the band in the next city gets our Sonoris OEM player and a DDP file as the final item of (internet) delivery: same (approved) DDP then gets sent to the replication plant. Everyone knows what they're getting; and it's faster, safer, at lower cost and with a lesser carbon footprint than posting physical media.

P.S. Saturday evening 19th March - looks like we're at war again  ...  :'(

You could make that work for you.

Burn the "hottest" disc ever!

All kidding aside, sounds a little paranoid to me.

Well I wish it was paranoid, a couple turned up in China from Japan with abnormal radiation levels
according to the chiese authorities the couple said to the authorities that they had not been within 160 miles of the plant. That shows how bad this really is. : (

Sadly something like this was always only a matter of time.

Is that a rumor, or is there a link?

(not that I'm too worried)

Where do you guys buys Taiyo yuden DVD from?
I was planning to buy That's branded Taiyo yuden Dvds from Japan
But then the Nuclear catastrophy happened

SafeandSoundMastering Do have a point
Guess where Taiyo yuden DVD/CD production facility is located

FUKUSHIMA :)

"Taiyo Yuden manufactures CD and DVD discs under its subsidiary company “That’s Fukushima Co., Ltd.” which is located in the Yanagawa Industrial Zone in Date, Fukushima. "
http://blog.cd-info.com/2011/03/taiyo-yuden-halts-production-of-optical-discs/

Believe me my favorite brand is Taiyo yuden so imagine when i found out where the Optical factory was....

I think they should move it to tokyo but probaly that wont happen yet....

Now I dont know how possible it is for radioactivity to remind on Material thats come from a clean lab in a Taiyo yuden building but.... is in fukushima and considering the nuclear accident it can make you think.......

Problem is the only other brand that is reliable is JVC and thats made by Taiyo yuden also
and maybe some Maxell, Verbatim ... but they are not so good as taiyo yuden which is king.

But it sucks eh Thats Fukushima that make taiyo yuden CDs of all cities where the nuclear accident happened it had to be in Fukushima where the Thats factory that make taiyo DVD is.

Taiyo yuden main office is in Tokyo but the optical facillities Taiyo yuden- thats DVD/CD are in Fukushima...

So the question reminds Do you want a Radioactive DVD from Fukushima?
LOL.... and i am a Taiyo yuden fan so i would be the first to defend their product
but the fact remind their DVD factory is in fukushima....

What i dont know is what radioactivity can comes into the building
frankly i think very few people know the answer for this even experts could not say for sure....

We ordered an extra case of TY CD-R's from our distributor right after the disaster.

As long as we don't do any in-house duplication jobs that should tide us over any disruptions in the distribution chain.

"UPDATE: Taiyo Yuden have announced that they have resumed shipments of optical media as of March 24th, 2011. The company is currently producing CD-R media and expects to resume production of DVD-R media starting in early April. The company has also announced that it is donating 50 million yen to aid relief efforts to the earthquake/tsunami victims and their families."

...from the bottom of that linked page.

I don't feel any need to buy a geiger counter to examine any new TY discs.

Please spare a thought for those people living in the affected areas, now that your favoured CD stock is no longer available.

Sorry, but I live about 160 miles from the disaster area...

When I said couple I meant a married couple not a couple of Taiyo Yuden CD-R's.
