Title: Waves is CRAZY!
Post by: Justin Fisher on January 06, 2007, 04:13:52 PM
$12,000 for the new Mercury bundle!  That's a joke right?
Who is going to spend 12 grand on software?

Waves really needs an a la carte situation, where you aren't paying full price for every single plug.  Like a build your own bundle deal or something.

Actually it's $500 more than that for the TDM version.

But the Native version is only $7,500.

most of the waves plug-ins are useful to me.
mercury breaks down to less than $150. per plug-in for the native versions.
i think it is a fair price.

I have close to that much invested in all my plug ins.
Waves isn't much for giving out deals, are they?
BTW, if you check with your local dealer, you can get a better price than directly through the Waves web store.

right.. they wouldn't undercut their dealers. and the street price tends to be lower.

if one is a waves user, they do get offered special deals: usually there is a different one every month. i think this month, it's 20% off gold...

They certainly never appreciate in value though, do they?

What audio gear does?
At least you wont have to take the software off to a tech.

hello to the n.a.r.a.s members among us. stop your sobbing.  waves offers a 50% discount 4 u. even "group buys" can't beat this crazy value.

Thanks for the question. Most really professional and proven gear will appreciate in value. Mine has Twisted Evil

Microphones - u 47, u67
Preamps-  Neve 1073 etc
Compressors - 1176  etc
Speakers (for example NS-10s go for double what I paid for mine).
Let's not even begin to talk about instruments.

good god 12k for a plug-ins bundle!!

I have used waves, do not own them.

I admit they seemed to sound much better then a DD plug-in.....

But, are they really worth spending 12k?
or even 6k at 50% off?

Do they really make a 6 grand change to the untrained ear?

Is it not possible to make great sounds without this huge investment?

I for one do not believe that plug-ins  make enough of a difference
to spend that ungodly amount of $$$....unless you truly have the money to make it sound that much better

maybe I am wrong though

I figure most people won't use all those plug ins, making the package overly expensive.

For a high profile studio things are different, however. Clients come in with all sorts of projects, and will complain if you do not have the same plug ins. This kind of a bundle is probably necessary in this case.

to put it in perspective, here are some things i do not need myself (or do i?):

a $6k daw (in addition to the computer)

a $6k equalizer

a $6k microphone

a $6k 2 track tape machine

etc.

exotic hardware tends to require regular maintanance and occasional repairs; a vintage device with blown tubes might be worth thousands, but...
software has different expenses.

MOST??????????  sorry, have to disagree there.

my ssl 384, sontec EQ, Focusrite Red3, myteck DAC, and quested monitors have not appreciated.

it's more appropriate to say, "some gear appreciates"  and even that might be a stretch.

in reality, it's old gear, that has a high demand and limited supply (due to production being stopped), and even then it's not every thing that meets that statement.  my symmetra peak passive limiter has certainly not appreciated.

AHhhh yes that old chesnut.

OK

Now firstly if you considder the current cost of a vintage 1073 or U47 as "VALUE" then you may have some in who will disagree with you.

But to do some maths via my trusty inflation convertor.
http://minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/

Neve 1073 module could fetch US$4K now which is the equivilant of US$755 in 1970 when it was released.

Neumann U 47 as a guess may fetch US$10K if it's working which would be equivilant to US$1K in 1950.

1176LN blackface sold for US$2500 on ebay recently, thats US$508 in 1972.

And I wont bother mentioning the NS10s as I know a friend who gave his away.

So im assuming that no servicing was needed in the last 30 - 40 years?

Maybe someone could fill in how much these items cost when released, im guessing for a 30 year investment I would hardly call these a great return.

Now lets hear about you instruments, I think I have an old Marshall that Jimmi Hendrix pissed on at woodstock.

David, just a quick point. The true return for audio gear is in the money you earn by using it, not appreciation.

While I'm sure no one would disagree you have taken that quote entirly out of context of my argument which is weather audio gear will really appreciate in value.

Fine, but you can't re-sell software. You're suck with it.

Actually, you can sell / transfer your software license.
