Title: Show us your room! pics 2007
Post by: TotalSonic on January 29, 2007, 07:24:30 PM
Figured it would be nice way to start 2007 with some updated "audio centerfold" shots of where we actually do our work -

I'll start -
Finally got around to starting to take some snapshots of my room towards getting a very very overdue updating of my website taken care of soon - and figured I'd share some of the first here -
it's humbler than mosts here - but the fact that I'm not in debt and am my own boss kind of makes up for that!

The painting of the guitar (including real strings and frets tacked onto the canvas) was by my grandfather, Maurice Berson.

Yeah, one of the two matching Lavry Blues on top feeds the Coleman's inputs as direct from source, and the second feeds the process chain - so I have the Lucid as a live feed back from the DAW (including whatever digital processing I have on - or at a switch to spdif from AES of what is just after the input of the ADC directly so I can hear things with just the analog processing only).

I needed a DAC with an onboard easily settable attenuator so I could do level matches between source and processed files quickly - I've definitely been thinking of replacing it with either a Mytek Stereo96DAC or a Lavry DA-10 but other gear purchases have taken a priority to date.

Anyway - the Lucid, while being a tiny bit smeared on the faster transients than other current options, is actually holding up well pretty well to my ear otherwise despite its age (the design was made in 1999 iirc).

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Well, here is some pics of my first room!  I've been working on it for the last 10 months, and have been semi-officially open for about 6 months now as Auricle Audio Mastering.  So far, so good!

The room is the "bonus room" in a rental town house, with future plans to expand into a bigger room.  The current room is on the small side, 12X15X8, but for my first set-up, I'm in Heaven!

Pretty much all the gear was new to me, purchased the same time my wife and moved into this place, so it's been a bit of a learning curve for my ears...lots of new things to get used to.

The desk was made by a friend of mine at Cascade Productions here is WA.  All the acoustic treatment was made by me and has been evolving as my ears get used to this room and the new gear.  With all the bass traps and absorbers, it's a little on the dry side, but the trade off in a low end response that is pretty smooth is worth it!

Let me know what you guys think!

But this is pretty close - The day I moved into the new room (May 1st?).

I can tell because I changed out the power conditioner the next morning.

Thanks Rogier, actually I'm right handed but being a drummer I like to mix it up. I also use both feet at the same time to change patches with the Z-Sys & load CD's into the drives Wink

Hey Brad, any photos of your place?  I didn't see any on your website.

But I know some places just don't take "good pictures."  There is no way I could possible take a decent photo of my room, because there is nothing in between the speakers and the engineer chair except air...nothing to "shoot."

Not really - I never finished the final trim work on the room so it's a touch rough around the edges. And now we're building a new room, so I'm going to document the build from start to finish - you'll have plenty of pics soon!

I'm in a new room too, it's finished, looks purrty, but I want to wait 'till I get my new router done (2 weeks or so!), then I'll give you the photos. The rack looks stupidly empty without it.

Looks nice John - I love the natural light you have in the room while it still looks like you have the first reflections dealt with.

But definitely photography isn't my forte either - I think I need to get a pro photographer in to do some shots as soon as there's the extra cash for one.

Yeah - same problem here - I'm in a building built circa 1900 that's floor goes all over the place - it took me a long time to get my turntable shimmed so it was flat!!

Actually that might make for a cool pic anyway - just seeing nice monitors and wall treatments can be very cool  - no need to have processors or a desk to be the focus.

Anyway - curious as to how you set processing changes then in a "pure listening" style room such as this.  With remotes or smaller racks at your feet ala BK?   With an assistant behind you ala Bob O. at Georgetown?

Hey Steve,

The rack is not that far away really, but it is out of the "magic spot."  Inconveniently, I just move over and make changes.  (The rack equipment is from about 3-5 feet off the ground level.) I am aware that is not ideal, but I made that choice to have the "pure listening" situation over the ability to hear changes instantaneously.  The computers' controls are within reach of my right hand whilst seated.

But the real reason it works is that no one ever comes in when I am working, except for me, of course.  I operate everything alone.  This is not a client attended facility...everything is either my own mixing, or sent in from outside.  So I have tailored the room for only me.  No good looks or nice plants or lovely lighting like many others.

Just the equipment for the sound I need to achieve.

Our latest pics are on our website and a few extras on MySpace. We'll be updating however, when reconfiguring the rack with the Sontec. The Lavry Blue DACs (currently at rear of the rack to make space for the Gold ADC) and other stuff will go in the side rack.
I'm loving these Duntechs and Legend subs. The big comfy couch sits on a slightly raised floor area at the rear wall, so ear level there is still with tweeters. Nicely thought out - great work by Tony here & George A. Looking forward to Room 2 (also Augspurger-designed) in the not too distant future too - it's all there, just needing finishings!

Hey Peter,

Yes indeed, Tim's stuff is spectacular.  I too have one of his compressors, and I would certainly be using it in Mastering if either of two criteria were able to be met:

1) I would get a call for mono mastering
2) I would get a second 670 to match.

As for the Manley, it does a good job, but I will replace, or more likely, augment the MP with a new Lucas Mastering Series Programme Equaliser that we're working on.

In a perfect world, then I would add Tim's 825 Stereo Mastering Equaliser.

Still searching for the "perfect" analogue valve Mastering compressor, and hoping we don't have to build that as well.

Nah - that's just a piece of a rack.  Filled with very very nice goodies I might add but the thread title says "room" - not "rack."

DC already has a couple cryptic shots of his console (probably slightly out of date) up on his website.  Think I can see an L2, a Weiss, the ol' Davelizer eq, Prism MEA2, and something that suspiciously looks like some kind of TC Finalizer.

Rumor has it that DC currently also uses the Pendulum OCL-2 on Brad's recommendation, and a TFPro P9 to Brad's disgust.

Hey Denis,

I'm proud to say Canadians make some great speakers/amps.

The ones we use here are from Steve Kranis at Audio Hardware in Toronto. He custom built the box, crossover, and the bass drivers. We selected the drivers based on our listening tests/tastes. We love 'em. Before I heard these I was looking at (dreaming of..) The big PMC's, B&W 801's and Dynaudio C4.

Maybe one day... but I'm more than good with the Kranis now.
Just like other speakers the amp is a big part. I use Bryston 4bSST's on mine and the other room uses JBL/Urei's. You could swear that you were listening to different speakers.

We selected a driver combo that gave us a good overall balance of punch, clarity, open top and not too bitey of a midrange.
I'd probably get the same ones tomorrow. I would be curious to hear how they would sound with a Classe or Chord amp.

Our is soffit-mount stule but he makes floorstanders, too.

Steve is 20 minutes away and drops in regularly to ask/give feedback.

I'm sure he has a website? His phone number is 416-288-1458.

Steve also love cars. I saw one custom pair he made with a very bright racing yellow paint. I don't know how it affected the sound but it looked good.

The names are reversed in the photo, it's Mike on the left.  But you knew that.

Fans of pop music should buy that Red Button record.

No dual mono ?? This is one of the things I love the most on it. Pure stereo - not doing everything twice - like on IBIS . And there is no problem to use it on mono source ...
A true stereo EQ and compressor is a real joy

respectfully, because I'm pretty positive based on user's reactions that the Gyraf Varimu is indeed a great sounding comp ....I disagree with the above.  Having a compressor be able to optionally trigger off the L & R (or M/S) channels as seperate signals instead of always having them linked is a really nice option to have to increase the versatility of the unit as often material will sound better processed as dual mono instead of linked stereo.  The API 2500 is also a comp with a single set of controls for both sides - but at least it can have the channels optionally unlinked.

Steve Berson

Yeah - personally I really can't imagine be comfortable dealing with that setup for 2 hours let alone a 10 hour session - but guess it works great for BK.

I always do find that it's interesting that the guy who wrote the most read book on mastering has a number of things in his setup & methods (i.e. crossover of monitors to subs at a relatively high freq, couch instead of a chair and console, 18' length for his room, a relatively larger amount of the processing in the digital realm, and of course the K-system) that's different from about 95% of the other mastering engineers out there.   But obviously he's staying busy and making his clients happy - so whatever works is great! - I just wouldn't want to have those things in my own setup.

Steve Berson

I didn't say the book had to be well written.......or even that the information contained on its pages had to be accurate.  You do howdever need to make it seem so, (accurate that is).  It is also rather important that you appear to be the final authority on the subject matter to the readers.

I converted an old tracking room, vintage: 1977, into a mastering room.  The console is a Neve 8014 frame, formerly owned and modded by Herb Jung, GRHS (Time Capsule).  I sawed off the meter bridge so I could see all the drivers of the loudspeaker columns.  I have since replaced the amp with an X-350.  Load in is from an ATR-102 or Technics DL-303.  Sometimes a digital source goes through a 4496 -series D/A.  I'm presently wiring together a pair of mono balanced P&G 1550s, with a pair of THAT 1200-series 0 dB line receiver amps, as buffer.  The faders will be my left/right trimmers, and I use a DK Audio vectorscope for balance/azimuth.

The faders have a microswitch at -infinity called "overpress for cue."  This should allow me to feed the chain without the trimmers, wherever convenient/advantageous.  I used a mirror to find the second reflection points and removed the underlying peg board (behind the shag carpeting on the walls) at those spots.  The hypotenuse traps over the front wall corners are custom-made frames, filled with Roxul.  I also removed one of the studio glass panes, which is right behind my head and filled the cavity with Roxul and covered it with burlap and also a thick, dark blue felt.  My speakers are far field Duns, so I listen at 12'.  This is my low end bump zone, where 808's sound full and treble on store-bought CDs finally makes sense.  I had tried listening closer up, but I felt I was missing the lowest octave.

Hi Tom,
The speaker cables are from Home Depot.  They are stranded 6 gauge and the mic cable interconnects are bundled in a black plastic hose.  So the speaker cables _are_ thicker than the gear cables!   The amp has large military-style capacitors and is balanced throughout.  Yes, the SC-Vs are far field monitors.  I sit about 12 feet from the tweeters.   My head is a few feet from the back wall, which has a huge bass trap behind me, containing about 5 feet of Roxul

ha.  Would that I could harvest the walls.

As for the controversial carpet choice, the room is only rented, so I'm not going to change the aesthetics dramatically.  Also, I'd like to keep it vintage for historical reasons.  The room was built by Queen City Album (Cincinnati) for tracking in 1977.  That carpet is 30 years old!  I was 10!  When and if I vacate, I will restore its functionality as a (vintage) tracking room.  My few acoustical modifications would be beneficial for that and are invisible.

Interestingly, no one has asked about the little video camera mounted on top of the left speaker.  That's an in-house surveillance camera feeding the control room (behind me).  If I want to track a drum set and not have it in the iso room (also fitted with a cam), I can set it up in the mastering room.  Before I built the bass trap behind the listening position, it was a large studio glass between the tracking and control rooms.  That control room is still used for mixing-hat days and makes a handy machine room for the computers on mastering-hat days.  The computer and digi cables go through the patch panel on the back wall of the mastering room into the control room.

The amp has large military-style capacitors and is balanced throughout.

You sure about that? I'm pretty sure none of Nelson's design are fully-differential...

Congratulations on converting the tracking room...probably a good, and good sounding, idea.

But shouldn't you also place a tiny camera on the right monitor, to "keep them in balance?"

You'd better watermark that photo Jerry or someone might steal it  Laughing

The first time I heard  an A7/mac combination was at the 2003 AES NY convention. I was shocked at how good it sounded. If I didn't live in close quarters in NYC there's no doubt it would be my home listening setup.  It was really fun to listen to.

Yeah, anyone with the A7/Mac combo: put on a vinyl copy of "River Deep, Mountain High," turn it up, and be totally amazed.

OK guys, since your gettin' off on it... here's a close-up:

A cherry Mac 275, original tubes iirc.

We were using the rig to shoot tones & noise in the room, listening for modes.

and of course some enjoyable nostalgic listening.

Thought of upgrading the drivers and rebuilding the crossovers...

The room was a great reverb chamber at the time.

Hi Brad,
This is one of his SuperSymmetry amps.

From the manual:

"The supersymmetric amplifier is a special subset of balanced amplifiers...  Supersymmetry is an approach that truly takes advantage of balanced operation like no other and requires a balanced input to retain the precisely matched behavior. Supersymmetry is ideally used to obtain high quality performance from very simple circuit topologies...   The supersymmetry topology does not use operational amplifiers as building blocks, nor can it be represented with operational amplifiers.  It has two negative inputs and two positive outputs and consists of two matched gain blocks coupled at one central point where the voltage is ideally zero.  The topology is unique in that at this point, the distortion contributed by each half appears out of phase with the signal, and we use this to reinforce the desired signal and cancel noise and distortion.  This occurs mutually between the two halves of the circuit, and the result is signal symmetry with respect to both the voltage and current axis, and antisymmetry for distortion and noise.  This means that the distortion and noise of each half appears identically and cancels."

Actually, the right speaker stays level with the left, even though there's no camera on top of the right speaker.  ();  Fortunately it's so small as to be acoustically transparent - even more so than the Dunlavy grill cloth, which I leave off, for visual impact.  (:
