There are amoebas that enter your nose and eat your brain until you die.

That could be bad!

Yeah, i'd read that earlier today on Yahoo news. That's terrible. I think that it stands to reason that if we're adapting to our surroundings to be more effective in surviving and creating new chemical formulas and better ways to live, that viruses do the same. With all the new ecosystems and environments that are introduced to each other and all the importing/ exporting (think: the monkey in the movie Outbreak, or that guy that found a Black Widow spider in his bunch of grapes), it's tough to ascertain where and why these viruses came from.

It's not a virus, it's an amoeba, a single celled creature. Unfortunately for us it just happens to find human brains tasty, and likes warm water... as do we.

It's not new either, been around for a while, though from 1995 to 2004 there were only 23 recorded cases,

Someone is going to say this is a conspiracy theory of the lunatic fringe.

And so is evolution.

Right, but I was comparing it to a virus or anything else that thrives on the destruction of it's surroundings to live.

Someone here is awfully sensitive. Methinks thee doth protest too much.

And I wouldn't confuse the tripe that gets posted here with well accepted science like evolution, bro.

Methinks someone here thinks all is about him. And there are huge numbers of people who regard evolution as a conspiracy theory. One man's science...

My daughter came home yesterday ranting about these amoebas, since her school does camping trips in the Havasu area.

We are also getting better at figuring out the culprits in these scenarios. Once a door is opened it's usually easier to walk through.

BTW- I always find it odd when they say shark attacks are up when in reality they are statistically down when compared to the number of swimmers in the water.

That doesn't mean the single celled organisms aren't starting a turf war.

For all us PSW users I'm happy to say so far they have not discovered a Brian-Eating Amoeba.

That would really scare me!

When my best friend told me he'd spent the weekend sailing on Lake LBJ recently, I sent him the same link Max posted and waited for him to squirm. Thankfully, my friend is a Texas Aggie and thus an unlikely target for a brain-eating anything.
