This might have come out a bit wrong - I by myself have cleaned capsules working like new in my studio.
The simple breath test alone can reveal if a capsule is clean enough.
Only if there‘s really some crusted oil (not visible in the picture) cleaning might be difficult or fail.
Still I would give cleaning a shot.
I‘m recording close mic’ed brass without extra windshield for decades and I‘ve never found trumpet oil residue on mic diaphragms.

Hello Kai,
I respect the contributions you have made here over the years tremendously. But on this subject we fundamentally disagree. Quote If your colleague wants a professionally reliable mic, at some point there is no way around replacing the capsule. That is an opinion in stark difference to my professional experience. Hundreds, maybe thousands of capsules have been professionally restored to factory performance, and for good. Quote I’m not clear about Neumann if they currently supply spares. Neumann continues to supply spare capsules for U47, 67, 87, KM84, etc. All the owner has to do is provide the mic's serial number, to prevent third parties/competitors from using Neumann capsules. Quote if the capsule is unusable anyway and he’s willing to take the risk of it being finally destroyed, why not make a cleaning attempt?Exactly. Besides, he may not like the sound of the current K87 which is distinctly different from a (healthy) original. Now to the advice given to the poster's friend. I do not believe that it is more than an opinion, supported by a poor quality picture. That advice may also be biased towards purchasing a new part from the vendor who obviously is not capable or inclined to try cleaning first. Have your friend post a high-res, close-up photo of both sides of the capsule, then we talk and decide. |

I’m not clear about Neumann if they currently supply spares. Replacing the capsule is no rocket science. On the other hand - if the capsule is unusable anyway and he’s willing to take the risk of it being finally destroyed, why not make a cleaning attempt? Everything can be removed, it’s just a question of the right solvent. The only part that needs to be clean is the diaphragm’s non-conductive ring without gold. The gold part can be left untouched, reducing the risk of removing the gold. |

My colleague sent the mic to a professional for inspection, and this was the report:
Quote Your U87 was just inspected. The contamination of the capsule is of greasy nature (probably trumpet oil, see picture), and cannot be cleaned away. This was the attached picture (apologies for the low quality, it's what we received) I advised that re-diaphragming is unlikely to be a good idea (based on advice I've seen Klaus give to others over time). The question at this point--provided the inspection report is correct and this is an oily substance like valve oil, is there anything that can be done (by anyone, anywhere)? Or is the best course to keep this original capsule aside and replace it entirely? Thanks so much. |

Hello, From time to time, crypto exchanges may hold prize draws in the context of new listings or collaborations. For example, within the framework of the Crypocto prize, there is only one condition, which is to use the cryptocurrency exchange service.

Any post WWII M7 have a different groove around the diaphragm, so it is very easy to tell Gefell from Berlin M7.To expand: Both Neumann and Neumann/Gefell used different shapes of the M7 backplate bearing edge (what you called "groove"). The design of these ridges - their numbers, height, width and distance to adjacent grooves - determine some of the acoustic characteristics of the capsule. But the easiest way to differentiate between an Neumann/Berlin and Neumann/Gefell M7 is the diameter of the center lead out screw heads and thread sizes: Berlin used an M1.2 thread, Gefell a visibly smaller M1. |

You can see the extra groove on the Berlin M7 vs Gefell, as well as the watch hand style center connect on Gefell.

I want to add something.
Any post WWII M7 have a different groove around the diaphragm, so it is very easy to tell Gefell from Berlin M7. There are also multiple contemporaneous writings about making the M7 in Berlin. |
