yes, all the time. I start with big mid fields(bearfoots) to get the physical feel of the bottom end of the record and the general impact of the dynamics, then I move to my smaller midfields(Proacs) for the majority of the mixing. once i've got my balances feeling good i move to my small boombox(sony) that's behind me and get down to the the most important part of mixing.

mastering type monitoring is individual to every mastering engineer. I've never in all my years been to two rooms that had the same setup. They have their room tweaked for their ears. I have my room tweaked for mine. When I bring my mix to Calbi or Ludwig I don't expect to hear any surprises.

A good combo that I use and many other too is the Genelec 8040 active and passive NS10 pair.

I start on the Focals SM11 for the same reasons Michael starts on the Barefoots. My smaller setup consists of Yamaha's NS10 (mostly switched to mono) - a cd gets put in the car system before I do any revisions or send it off to mastering ...

For me, it's Tannoy SRM 10B for working loud and feeling the response of the room.  Then Yamaha NS 10 for balances.  I recently bought M Audio BX5a for surround mixing.  They are pretty cool speakers too, and I've been using them.  My car can tell me things that are very useful, too.

I found working in other rooms usually requires I bring my own monitors, power amps and cables. At least you have a starting point.
The comfort and comprehension of your personal space is usually best as strange acoustics will still reek havoc to your references.

I always bring a very familiar set of cans and my personal designed headphone amps. That way, no matter where I am, I can get predictibility and consistancy.

Spending a 1/2 hour just playing back my own stuff helps "condition" me to the new acoustics and room a bit.

I switch between Focal Twin 6's and NS10's. Mainly I work on the focals, periodically I'll check things on the NS10's, I also have a pair of radio shack minimus 7's but I can't remember when I used them. Also I usually don't monitor very loud

We track and mix on Westlake BBSM-10s and check mixes on JBL 4208s.  Big contrast between the two - when things sound about the same on both we have a mix that translates to most systems.

ProAcs w/ Velodyne sub for the majority of the work, Mix Cubes for getting midrange right. Sony boombox for reference.

I have a pair of B&W 602's, which have good transient response and a full sound and switch to Duntech PCL15's they have less bottom end but are great for accuracy in the mids and highs and exell for stereo imaging. I also take a mix on a CD to the car for a listen.

I have KRK VXT8s as my main monitors but also an old pair of krk 6000 little monitors. Both being KRK you'd think they sound similar but not at all. The 6000s have tons of detail and imaging and I believe they have the same tweeters as the original exposes. The Vxt8s are more all around speakers with a much more full sound. I find the best mix is somewhere between both sets, well that and my car. Occasionally I do take the 6000s and some mastering gear into my vocal room, which is way deader with less gear to bounce off of. IMHO the more speakers and environments you check your mix in the better, and I love hearing it mixes in crappy conditions too.

I'll use whatever the studio has for mains near the start and finish, but mostly I'll mix on NS10s or Auratones- whatever they have. If they don't have either, I'll bring my own Auratones and an amp.

I've also been starting to cross-reference on these little silver mac speakers which have been a great secondary reference.

At any rate, I feel there's almost no point in mixing if you don't have access to some kind of non-ported, transient-accurate set of speakers that you know well.

Ross,

pro acs ..yes until over time I would listen to them less and less
i finally realized that everytime I went to them I was changing my mix balance
and then
in a very clinical listening
the changes were not for the better
so
i just stopped using them
i prefer the hothouse and the ae classics now over the pro acs

I use Hot House PRM 165 Mk II and a mono Avantone for a different perspective.

M&K MPS1611P as the main thing and Genelec 1019A to ensure the midrange.

I switch between MM27s and NS10s in our main room and between Bruce Maddocks-designed custom nearfields with a sub and NS10s in our mix room. I always print a copy to listen to in the car or on computer speakers.

Two part question:

Do you guys switch between monitors during mixing??  What monitors do you guys use??
Yes.
Dynaudio BM6a (pair), Altec-Lansing ACS900 (desktop computer speaker-mono), Beyer DT770 (headphones), Sennheiser HD280 (headphones).

Why dont mix engineers have mastering house type monitoring set up??

Thanks

It's on my list.

I've been on the proacs for 2 years now and am definitely starting to feel that. I am by no means a great or even good mixer but I definitely feel like the pro Acs provide a lot of information but they they don't give me any direction, if that makes any sense. Recently I mixed a record on a pair of jbl lsr32s and loved it. Which, to me, is really funny because I HATED how they sounded for the first several days but loved what they made me do. The newer 6332 didn't seem to do the same thing though. Anyone have any experience on either of these jbls?
