Title: CK12 Capsule In AKG 414: How To Test?
Post by: brett on July 07, 2008, 10:28:00 PM
Buying a c414eb and need to test the c12 tension. How do I remove the screens? I have never seen one in hand, so I need to know what tools to bring and how to do it.

Also, will I be ok with my speck 5.0's phantom as a power source?

Remove the four slot screws from the bottom of them mic's body. Remove the silver mic body by stripping it off the amp, downwards.

Unhinge both screens upwards, one after another, starting from the bottom (where the black plastic tabs with the symbols and numbers on them are) and slightly pull the screens down, to release them off their nipples.

Now you have the CK12 in front of you, to make your tests.

I'm not sure I would pay the $2,000 for this mic that the seller is asking.  But that's just me.

Brett, I'm sure many of us are curious to know how you are going to test the capsule tension. Can you tell us?

I do not think he is going to test the tension.  The opening is for the visual inspection.  The real test is done listening to the mic.

What am I saying you know all of this Magneto.

I know everybody does not agree about the Diaphram color thing.  After JJ pointed it out,   every non reskin I have seen has the amber hue,  every reskin goldish.  This one is Amber.. fwiw

Does this one look dirty? Does it need cleaning?  Who can do it if Klaus is too busy?

I have been wishing for Klaus to work on my stuff for years now.  The last time I spoke  to him he asked my to call him after the new year (2006/7?)  After that I was told there was no list.

Who would you trust to clean a capsule?

That capsule is filthy.  I have had situations where CK12 diaphragms stuck to the backplate, because they were dirty.  Once they were cleaned, the problem went away.

I ended up buying a c414eb.  it's different than the one in the pic but looks the same inside. The capsule is not a reskin. It has that strange patten in it when you look at in person at an angle. The tension on the mic was great and the diaphram release instantly and beyond that it just sounded amazing on my voice.

Strange pattern?  Post pics, please.

It's not a striped pattern, is it?

It wasn't striped. what is your concern there?

The mic "sounds amazing" with your voice? What else  is there to discuss? You are done, one of the few, and congratulations!

Anyone know the size of the brass CK-12 capsule? Is it 1"? (I am experimenting/testing capsules of a new capsule only manufactured in China)

Chance, the CK12 is a very complex design whose construction has been discussed on the internet before. Many people seem to sell C12-style capsules which may also not have a centre-termination, like the CK12, but are otherwise nothing like a CK12.

If you get a sample, measure it and then dismantle it and post pictures here.

The reason I want the size of the CK-12 is because I took the brass CK-12 out of an old "EB" and put it in an AKG "the tube". So the old EB is a good candidate for checking/hearing what quality this new company puts out. as for disecting and getting inside, I would rather someone with qualifications do that. I requested samples, they agreed and asked "what sizes?" So,,,, CK-12 = ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think it is generally referred to as a 34mm capsule.

Long time lurker; first post here.

Curious about this reference to a striped pattern on an old CK12 capsule. I am looking at this very clean C414EB with what I'm 99% sure is the original CK12. But the appearance of the capsule is a bit concerning. Any thoughts most appreciated.

Thanks.

I would not have any objections to a capsule with that surface pattern on its diaphragms.
The striping is common to a certain era of CK12 capsules. It is probably the result of the machine that rolled out the plastic substrate.
