I walked into our local computer shop and sitting on the Clearance Shelf was a brand new Plextor Premium CD burner in a sealed box. I thought WOW! So I brought it, came home and installed it and downloaded Plextools XL off the net and it is working GREAT! I wonder how many of these are still sitting on back shelves covered with dust just waiting for someone to know what they are. I am really really happy and wanted to share. Now back to our regularly scheduled program....

Congrats, Tom, that should keep you going for a while.

Fortune smiles upon you my brother!
You know they're out there...
I still find NOS 716's on eB*y once in awhile
but they're getting rarer.

a rare find indeed! how much did it set you back, if you don't mind my asking?

$50.00 which I gladly paid. The owner of the store said he had ordered in for a client who later changed his mind and it had been sitting on the shelves in back ever since. I was at the store to purchase a fan for my office computer. I asked him if he had any other Plextors in stock but he said he did not.

Hello Thomas,
perfect timing of this thread (for me). Just had a new DAW built for me. And in anticipation of the day this would happen (a couple of years ago) I had purchased a spare "Premium" !
I have 3 questions for you:
1- which version of Windows are you running?
2- which version of Plextools did you install?
3- I assume you got that version on Plextor's site? If not where?
Thank you in advance for your reply,
Denis

1. Windows XP Pro build three
2. Plextools XL most current version
3. I got it off the Plextor website - here is the web address http://www.plextor-digital.eu/index.php/component/option,com_jdownloads/Itemid,0/catid,86/cid,470/task,view.download/
Best of luck.

Thanks Thomas.
You think there's a chance I can have the laster version working with Windows 7 PRO?
-
I haven't had much luck running Plextools (any version) on Win7 Pro. Maybe I don't have the right version...? Any using it successfully? Which version?
Thnx.

Hopefully some one here as an answer?

There are lots of places that sell refurbished computers for less than $200 and they come with Windows XP pre loaded. In a pinch you could always just purchase a second computer for CD checking. Here is one place that sells them.http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0360494

JL,
have you tired it with Windows 7's XP mode ?

why not get a new Plextor 890 with Plexutilities? 50bux all in the box at Fry's.
no chasing old drives and software that may or may not work on modern systems.
Plextors and Lite-Ons are basically Philips burners anyway. They match up pretty well with the Philips blank discs, not that there a lot of discs being torched these days.
yes, I still have a 760, it's fine with PlexTools but if the new 890 works and is readily available, no problem.
Just dropped an 890 into the mastering crate, we'll see in a few days if there are any issues here, I don't think there will be but if there are, you'll hear from me.

plexutilities is no where as useful as plextools.
their new burners do burn great tho.
-
in a cursory look at the lit that came with it, Plexutilities didn't seem to be lacking and my main interest is C1/C2/CU for CD checking and it has that according to what I've read.
what am I missing of serious consequence from Plextools (which I still have+burner for it) ? the whole rig is dismantled for a move at the moment so it will be a few days before I dive back into it.

what i've found, is PU's readings aren't very constant -- and im not sure trust worthy.
i tested a disc with both PU and PT, and the PT one had the same reading everytime, and the PU one was different, sometimes drastically.
YMMV/FWIW/ZIPZAP/BOOMBAP
:)
-
well, cool.
when things get reassembled, i'll try the same test here and see what happens.
what burners were you using for the tests?
-
880SA and 716A
hopefully one day, masters on CDRs will be as rare as u-matic masters are today
-
what, you don't miss your BVU and the chatter of a DTA printing out results that show you just wasted the last couple of hours due to one error at the 67 minute mark ?
i'm gonna go stripe some tape just for old times' sake... :'(
-
luckily i wasn't old enough to make masters for that format, just run them in the dupe lab

I've only just noticed this thread now as I also haven't been on PSW in a while mainly for the same reasons. Usually too much work on. All the best Brad, you've run a tight ship. I was going to say DC would be a good replacement but he has his own forum now anyway..
No doubt we'll be in touch on other forums or on FB.
