Title: decent/cheap digital de-esser?
Post by: springman on December 27, 2004, 12:11:37 PM
Anyone have any recommendations for an under $1500 box that does a reasonable job of removing sibilance in the digital domain?  I'm not  looking for programs/software, I want hardware.  thanks-

dbx Quantum. Got mine on Ebay. It was a Quantum that I upgraded the sofware to a Quantum II status for free online at the dbx site.

Same here. I use the MB for de-essing: xover at 5kHz, ratio 5:1, pull threshold back as needed, auto release, stir to taste...

I suppose the Finalizer can be used as well for this purpose.

You might even be able to find a t.c. M5000 with MD2 in that price range and get a bunch of other great things besides frequency selective dynamics to play with. With MD2 you can disable the top and bottom band and just use the mid band, zeroed in wherrever you like - basically the same as a de-esser. Any old multiband mastering processor can be adapted in some way, though with many (like finalizer) you can't actually disable the extra bands, but can adjust thresholds so that they aren't in gain reduction.
