Post by: bigbone on May 09, 2011, 08:57:04 PM

Ross , or someone with experience with the Royer 121-122 mic
what is the sonic difference , if there are, between those 2,
and Ross , which one do you prefer for OH'S.

Thank you

the 122 is a phantom powered ribbon
it has more gain and has more mid bite
I like the 121 better for guitars in general but the 122 is a bit more rock n roll for overheads and applications where you would add upper mid eq to a 121
so in general
the 122 is better for oh or room unless your room is very bright and needs to be dulled

For what its worth - I've found the R-121 changes more when you change mic-pre's than the R-122 [loading stuff]... which can be a good thing or a bad thing.  Much like Ross's comment I've found the R-122's make great overheads but the R-121 and R-122V make way better guitar mics [the R-122V just because its one of the most excellent mics ever made... the R-121 because I can really lock it in depending on the pre-amp that gets used].

I hope this is of some additional assistance.

Peace
