Title: EMI TG Limiter Plug Ins

I got a chance to work with these a little while back, do they actually respond or sound anything like the actualy TG limiters or are they just a generic limiter with the TG name on it?

Ive never used a real TG which is why I ask. OBVIOUSLY it wont sound the same as the actual TG, but does it even respond similarly?

Anyone use both?

I really like those plugs. I have no idea how they compare to the originals, as I've never used them, but that doesn't matter to me, as long as they sound good. They sound good if you have some lead tracks that need toughening up & still need to cut through. Nice for a full sounding bass track too.

I really didn't like them but I tend not to like most comp/limiter plugs minus multiband.

I also would love to hear from someone who actually knows if they are as they claim! I have no idea what they are supposed to be like- but that seems to be most often the case... especially with these!

I understand liking them for what they are but the minute the manufacturer puts "EMI" on them, they need to be held accountable. Otherwise they should just sell the "Limiter" plug in...

Im not a big fan of this marketing cheese...

These get a lot of use on vocals, bass and drum bus around here.

Just an observation on the hardware Zener compressor. Yesterday I had it on the 2 bus and the setting where it sounded the best, revealed zero compression on the meters. I'm sure there was some going on because those meters are pretty slow and useless, but having said that, the program sounded so much richer just going through the electronics.

So when evaluating the plugs, I'd be curious to know how they sound or change the program material with little to no compression - and if they in fact emulate the way the electronics of the box affect the sound.

I like the plug ins... but i DON'T find they add the kind of obvious tonal changes that (just going through) the hardware boxes do

I never really LOVE any plug in compressor.
they ALL seem too clinical somehow.

Thats well put. They really do have a sterile quality most of the time.

People seem to like the uad 33609 plug. I have a 33609jd here- the plug sucks relatively speaking. Whenever you have them side by side, the difference is amazing...

I like the EMI limiter plugin quite a bit
I own a Chandler EMI hardware compressor and it is great
but
for a plugin
the limiter does a fine job of emulating the hardware
the compressor side of the plug is much less appealing
the limiter can definitely do a good job of crushage similar to the hardware

Interesting.

Could this plug do a good job crushing drum room mic's as well as hardware?

its a great plug.
i find myself using the EMI 1969 in limit mode / fast release / crank the hold knob.
- room mics
- piano

it's one of 4 or 5 plugin compressors that i find usable.  it's perhaps less subtle than some other plugs but it maintains the sonic fidelity in most cases.

i find that i can use that, the Waves API, the URS 1975, and the Digi dynamics 3, and usually end up not hating things.  i have no experience with the UAD stuff so no comment there.

I haven't really liked any plug-in compressors much at all either. No mojo. Nothin'

But, I don't know if you've tried the UAD VCA VU, but, this compressor has some serious mojo. After the trial period, I bought it immediately.

You can achieve some very nice pop on snares, kick and wonderful attack/definition on bass. Haven't tried it on vocals yet.
