Title: You know what annoys me?
Post by: electrical on April 29, 2006, 01:31:44 PM
Not much really annoys me. This shit annoys me:

I grab a bunch of mic cables and they're all coiled wrong, so they tangle into a wad when I try to unwrap them.

Someone tried to use the wrong mic clip for a mic, and instead of getting the right clip when he realized his mistake, he wrapped a yard of gaffer tape around the mic. At the end of his session, he put the mic back in the drawer with the tape still stuck to it, and now it's a gummy mess I have to contend with.

Instead of lowering the thermostat, they've propped-open the door so I'm heating the great outdoors all day.

The band spends the first three hours of the day lolling around on the phone, creating a manifesto of a lunch order, socializing with their friends and fucking around on Myspace, and then wants to work until 4am "because we have so much to do..."

The phone rings and nobody answers it, so I have to interrupt what I'm doing and answer it. Then the staff's collective response to this complaint isn't "you're right, we should be answering the goddamn telephone," but instead, "See? We need voicemail."

The mobile phone makes the guitar amp go "dit-dit-dit" during the quiet part. For the eighth time today.

When the dude you did a favor for acts like the favor was standard and expects an extra-super-double favor this time, and gets weird when you decline.

Graffiti. Buy your own damn building, build your own damn gangway and spraypaint your name on it. Leave me out of it.

The land speculator assholes buy the building next door and knock it down, in the process fucking up the water main, the electric service, the sewer, cracking the wall, flooding the basement and making life hell for a few months. They then leave it as a vacant lot for two years, with a swampy marsh in the center that breeds mosquitoes and smells like Gary, Indiana. Then the bums who collect scrap metal and cans from the alleys start using the swamp as a place to burn the insulation off cabling to get the metal out. Then one of the bums notices that there is a copper coolant pipe on the side of our building running up to the HVAC unit on the roof. The bum then tears this pipe off, so he can get a couple of bucks for it from the scrapper. Then I have to spend $5000 fixing the blown compressor, replacing (and bum-proofing) the whole shebang. And the land speculator assholes adamantly refuse to help us out at all.

To recap:
Mic cables, tape on the mic, the door open, the band wasting my time, the phone/voicemail thing, mobile phone noise for the eighth time, the dude you did a favor for, graffiti, the land speculator assholes and the copper pipe thing.

You need a vacation. Like a week or two someplace mellow and nice where you can have a good time. Annoyances tend to stack up, and you're going to be wound up like those mic cables before too long...

You know.... A thousand miles apart, in different countries, with a couple of million dollars in investment difference.... exactly the same issues.. not similar.. exactly (except for the copper pipe) LOL

Just had a "diva" (she acted like one anyway), piss away four hours being late for sessions and going out for coffee... turn around and complain that she should get a few more hours to tweak her tracks.  She got upset that I suggested she pay for these hours.

The wasting time thing is why we have a hard stop rule after 10 hours, except the rare times when we are feeling like continuing to roll for a while when 10 hours arrives.

It gives some structure to the day and prevents having to round people up when they are off screwing around on the web.

We also have a VERY slow computer for web access, which makes it no-fun to play around for much longer than it takes to check email.

The 10 hours thing does result in us having to skip eating every now and then when the band is insane.

This exact thing happened to me THIRTEEN days in a row last month. I essentially had to throw them out at 5 AM.

If we let bands fuck around as much as they'd like (and then didn't bill them for the hours, like they'd like), we'd all end up working for less than minimum wage.

Well lots of shit annoys me, so I’ll have to pare it down to a top-ten.

Something is spilled on the floor/broken into pieces/missing. There are only 4 people at the session, but nobody seems to do anything about it/know anything about it/have it.

A fuse blows in something. The correct fuse not at hand, so unit is bundled with higher-than-rated fuse which ultimately explodes unit (note that the corollary of this is being somewhere that doesn't have a set of spare fuses for the equipment at hand).

People that walk into a room clapping to check acoustics (I don’t know why this annoys me so much, but it just does – makes me think the next session is just going to be recording hand-claps).

People who order take-away coffees and put the cardboard takeaway tray on the equipment rack, then attempt to lift the coffee off the tray by the dodgy plastic lid, spilling the contents on the equipment rack.

People who don’t replace the log-roll on the holder, but instead place it on the floor where the said log roll gets wet so when you go to use it, it feels like you're wiping your arse with hair gel.

People who yank mic cables by the lead and then wonder why they’ve stopped working.

People who gesture something while holding an unopened beer, then act surprised when explodes with froth on opening.

People who use gaffer tape on things that should be secured permanently by more effective/cheaper/more aesthetically pleasing means.

Tapes that are supplied without track listings or notes or tones or labels, so the first hour is spent trying to work out what is on each track.

What I find funny is some of the stuff I hate as well but I've also found Im the culprit.

I break my own ground rules and methods all the time because I get busy or distracted.

I yell at people for something I did... all the time.

It started right after I turned 40.

It really, really annoys me when people move my car while in Guitar Center!

Wow- What copper pipe is still that valuable? We had a similar situation at Idful, when Andy Bryant called me to alert me to his ability to see "light coming from the toilets". A quick check in the basement confirmed it: all the pipe- copper & otherwise- had been sawed off all the bathroom fixtures from below. Water & shit & piss flowed freely, as Idful shared its bathrooms with the other building tenants. All copper to & from the a/c compressors was stolen, but at least the units were still there. We had our rooftop compressors stolen repeatedly over 10 years and stolen coolant was an annual right of summer passage. It wouldn't be June if Idful's a/c wasn't sucked dry... The joys of owning a business in Chicago. Good luck, Steve!

Great post Steve!

The tape residue on the mic clip is infuriating, if it gets on the mic - firing squad, no trial Twisted Evil

Wrapping cables incorrectly is just plain wrong!  Demoted to intern, lose a turn.

Regarding stolen metals, somebody swiped the "hat" off of our chimney - savages in this town.

The one that REALLY annoys me, though, is when the parking lot in the back of our place gets full of cars belonging to the neighbors.  They know we are too nice about it to say anything -- so then they let their clients, visitors, spouses and friends park there, too.  Always right in front of the load-in door Rolling Eyes

Oh, and its really great when their alarms go off cuz we're loading around their cars, which are blocking our door.

Thanks for a good thread topic in your own forum.

Warm analog regards,

lurking for ages, just hadta jump in on this great post.

the most annoying thing for me, is when i spend all my time, money and effort to get a good recording going, and the band turns up unrehearsed.

band: "umm... is it the chorus now?"

me: "its your *(&^$%$%^ song! you don't know?!?!"

that and when people start checking acoustics by clapping their hands... like Linear, it just annoys me and i don't know why! Laughing

you know you really have to be insane to want to do this job. I was told that if anyone tells you they want to be in the music business, that means they have no idea what the music business is, knows no-one in the music business, and couldnt make it in the business. the only ones in the business have to be in the biz cause its the only thing we could/ would do.

I also don't find that clapping tells me that much in a new room.

what i do is yell "hey!" loudly, and listen to the decay.

that seems to tell me a lot more.

and I'm sure it's MUCH more annoying to the average bystander.

I thought all the great cats banged on a snare drum while walking around in the room yelling "that's not it!"?

Personally, I sometimes do a clicking sound with my tongue (kinda like the sound of a ping pong ball getting hit by a racket) and vary the pitch while listening. This causes some trouble since I cannot yell "that's not it!" simultaneously. Then again, I'm no great cat.

That's a quality control issue. Your staff is trying to tell you that your facility needs voicemail capability, in order to operate at a better quality level.

Which seems reasonable. Engineers are efficient when they're engineering, rather than answering ringing phones.

Here at the Curve Lab, we utilize Verizon AnswerCall. It works like an automatic secretary. Very useful. Callers can leave a message while we're working, and we can respond to the messages during downtime.

the coolant pipe has another serious drawback which is the leakage of refrigerant into the atmosphere.  that annoys me.  people are self-centered and will not change, so strict rulesets seem to be the only way to deal with them, until proven otherwise, i see no harm in it.

Wasn't the proper room response technique demonstrated by Tom Hanks in the re-make of The Ladykillers? But seriously (ok...semi seriously) although this happens mostly in live performance situations I think that when someone insists on testing a mic by blowing into it, it should generate a well-aimed "hail 'o bullets"!

Whats the matter with just talking? You know the sound of your own voice speaking better than anything. You spend alot more time listening to yourself talk than clapping or whistling a sweep tone. I'm sure anyone reading this can close their eyes and imagine the sonic signiature of a bathroom quite easily, even one you havent been in much, let alone clapped in. But dont go around clapping in public bathrooms, someone may mistake that for applause.

The AC thing is a PITA.

One evening in mid summer I showed up after grabbing dinner and noticed the room was hot, the thermostat didn't light and the fan didn't come on so i checked the breaker panel. Nothing was tripped. I cancel the session for the night and go around back and notice the disconnect was stolen on the unit.

The next day I call the HVAC guy for a new one, he drops by and the damn thing is back. Someone borrowed it. WTF?

When I'm checking acoustics I just randomly shout "AH", very short and loud, without any warning to anyone else, without any real thought on my part..  Rolling Eyes
It scares the shit out of my girlfriend, who runs the studio with me, cos she never knows when I'm going to do it; and neither do I.
Maybe it's a mild form of Tourettes Syndrome?
I do also do the handclaps (which also scares the crap out of my girlfriend), but I find that I can shout louder than I can clap.
It's something I started doing when we were treating one of our live rooms, and I wanted to see what difference our work was making to the sound of the room, but now it's a bit of a habit..

Sometime I don't have to get up early to go to work.

Other times, I get annoyed when I have to after a night out at the pub.

It's hard to time this shit.

I also get annoyed when I look at all the drums and mics I have after programming loops all day that suck.

One day I sat back and listen to Carly Simons "your so vain" and thought,

holy-shit,

what a great record.

With Andy Newmark on drums. Huge fucking tom fills.

Then I come home and the fucking disney channel is on 24/7.... Hannah Montana.
Who is Billy Ray Ciruses daughter. He's even in the fucking show.

Then I think, Carly or Billy?

Thank god for my sons baseball games and those Newmark fills?

But....I will be cutting real drums {bigband} tomorrow for a fucking commercial you can see soon during Hannah Montana.

Re: the handclap check - I was in a newly built studio recently and the OWNER HIMSELF suddenly started clapping his hands to demonstrate the effectiveness of his treatment (mainly carpeted walls I hasten to add). It unfortunately went Gank! Gank! prompting him to add "Nearly there" before pretty much offering me some time in there tracking rock bands...I said nothing and silently, slowly backed towards the door...

Chicago sounds a bit like Glasgow (i.e. a shade apocalyptic), we're "out of the way" near an airport so the value of copper piping hasn't affected us much yet, but as far as pet hates are concerned:

Yes, the mis-coiling/treatment of leads is always no.1, especially those hard wired to vintage equipment. Why?

All patchbay wiring un-neccessarily cleared (mid-project) because someone "needed a clear mind" when doing something else incredibly simple (ok not difficult to re-patch things but again, why?) There are a couple of things (like the scope) which will always be taking a signal from somewhere. A lead hanging out of something someone else was using yesterday which you won't be using today could be left until the other person has finished with it, couldn't it? A very small thing, but I struggle to understand, to the point of killing.

Use of MY chair.

Watching other people work. I try not to look or listen, it's utter agony.

Talking. Shut up and listen, it's getting done NOW.

"Nice tape machines, have you got P*! T*&%s?"

Un-necessary use of the word "Rolling" especially after initial tracking when the performer can clearly hear the cue. This upsets me (and some performers) tremendously.

Rats. Brown ones. Nibbly ones.

(Sorry) People who plainly cannot sing well enough for the job intended but who insist on an Elton John-esque marathon of comping in the vain hope that you will make wine out of water and then ask about auto tuning later blah blah. No. Everyone around you is in pain.

Money. Shame but everything must have a price it seems, even art(obvious but it affects all recording). I wish I could do more for free/for my friends. I hate charging them, but we wouldn't be there for them otherwise.

Your neighbor should contribute to those expenses. There has got to be something you can do that's not a complete waste of your time.

Groups of people can sometimes be infiltrated by a slacker or slackers. Usually it can be just one person that makes the whole situation unproductive and unworkable. Find this person and terminate said individual. Either that or start charging a hassle fee; $100 everytime they hassle you.

I hate drummers who show up four hours late for an all-band session because their fill-in at the 7-11 didn't show up, then arrive without their kick pedal and haven't changed heads since Roosevelt was president. That's Teddy, not Franklin.

I hate guitar players who leave their half-smoked joints on top of my vintage Marshall half-stack. A basketweave cab ain't an ashtray.

I hate interns who steal the half-smoked joints from the top of my Marshall half-stack.

I hate all the entourage members some bands bring to the studio who consume all the food and drinks we keep in the fridge for ourselves, who don't have time to take a break and catch a meal. Munchies will put many studios into Chapter 11.

And that duct-tape-around-the-KM84 trick bugs the shit out of me. What's a safe substance to clean that crap off my mics?

You know what I hate?  Drivers who never look in their fucking rear view mirror.  It's like, their driving along, slowly, looking for a parking spot or whatever, and they have completely failed to notice that somebody is behind them because they are totally self involved, so they don't pull over and let the ten cars that are jammed up behind them pass.  God, I hate that.

I also hate the people who always stand in the middle of the road on the way up to my house, so they can get their picture taken in front of the Hollywood sign.  Hey, guess what!  There's a car coming to run you over!  Maybe you shouldn't be so casual and think that you have the right of way to stand in the middle of the goddamned street for a photo!

What's a "log roll"?

bob

It's a signature Mick Fleetwood fill.

This is a great topic!

A lot of this falls under the "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it!" category. That's the lesson I learned when I was running my room for public use.

I have just recently been able to speak to my wife on this subject. It's only taken seven years for me to get to the point where I could think about it without frying a circuit or blowing a tube.

I had a client who wasn't happy until I had patched everything in the rack into the mix. Same guy used to drive me nuts doing vocals ... 6 hours of punching one word at a time.  In the end the first take where we would run all the way through the song without stopping, always sounded the best to me. I learned to print those to two tracks. One for a keeper and one to punch in on. The same guy used to come into the studio and head for the first aid kit in the bathroom and clean out all the decongestant tabs I had .... "Hey! It costs me money to have the supply guy restock that thing ..." Then he would grind me for a lower rate.

Here log roll is toilet paper.

Here's another thing that annoys me. Studios that list 'all the classic compressors' on their gear lists.

'1176, LA2a, Fairchild 670's, LA3a's, 160VU's, 2254's'

but then when you actually read the fine print (sometimes on another page), they're all plug-ins to an HD system.

If I went to a studio, and the $50,000+ list of compressors was actually $1,000 worth of plug-ins, i'd be pissed.

Same problems with guitarists! this realy bother me when a band don't pay attention to my ears! 'cause i need it and of course they need it to run well(my ears)

Oh man. That sucks...specially the blown air conditioning.
...and the stupid ass cell phone trippin the amp...

I hear ya. All you can do is shake yer head for a bit...and have a beer when you get home.

Just saw this very funny thread.

I think the ONLY thing that TRULY frosts my apricots when all is said and done is...

You break something that belongs to me... and ya don't tell me about it.

See.... The historical precedent is: I've had kids blow up shit that goes into the tens of thousands of dollars in one fell swoop, and after me simply getting to the bottom of what happened, and how it can be avoided in the future... It was the LAST ANYBODY heard of the subject.

When ya treat calamity like that.... You feel you might not be crazy to expect honest and forthright confessions regarding the breakage thing....

But NO.

Stealth.

I just clammed up another one: Clients who insist on calling you incessantly about stuff that's not important at all, i had one call me today to tell me she got a contract with a lawyer to shop her songs, one yesterday to say "we need to fix the vocal" which I told him last week, another gripe are the calls from people thinking we are a record label and want a sponsor, the others are kids who call over and over and hang up when you quote an hourly rate, and last but not least the clients who think that because they hired slack musicians who could make it happen that somehow i have to eat it.

When you're recording a band for next to nothing and you have to continually ask them not to press on the cone on your monitors that you bought on credit and then the next day you see that your one of your tweeters has been DENTED INWARDS and you don't have the 300+ dollars it'll likely take to fix it because you're in school and the band refuses to claim any responsiblity but kindly hands over the 20 DOLLARS you charged them for tracking/mixing/mastering their newest hit. I also secretly laughed when I saw one of them twirling around my headphones like a fucking lasso when I came in from having a cigarrette.

Sorry for the lack of punctuation, I had a bad weekend.  Mad

That's a quality control issue. Your staff is trying to tell you that your facility needs voicemail capability, in order to operate at a better quality level.

I'm sure he doesn't need his staff to tell him if he needs voicemail, he's probably aware of the plus and minus of it all on his own.

Which seems reasonable. Engineers are efficient when they're engineering, rather than answering ringing phones.

Are you sure he's referring to only engineers when he says staff?Perhaps there are assistants that shouldn't be letting the phone ring and ring.

Here at the Curve Lab, we utilize Verizon AnswerCall. It works like an automatic secretary. Very useful. Callers can leave a message while we're working, and we can respond to the messages during downtime.

Thanks for the explanation of how voicemail works...yes it is very useful...who would have thought!

Love the rant, but it's just hit the nail right on the head.  I fucking hate messed up Mic cables, and why, when there are cable ties for every Mic cable in the studio (my studio that is) why after a session with another engineer do I find shit loads of them all over the place and a big pile of Mic cables in the corner of the room. USE THE FUCKING CABLE TIES.

Not sure I agree with the 10hr limit.  I find creativity not to have a sense of time (chronologically not musically), but it is annoying when the twat's turn up late and then go on til god knows when.

Oh people who pretend they know what they are on about too. That's what really annoys me.  If you know your stuff, brilliant, lets talk, learn from each other.  If you don't just say, don't talk shit and waste everyones time. There is shit loads I don't know about, so i don't TELL people about it.

Heres mine:

musicians who rip the headphones off their heads after a take and drop them from head hight onto the floor, then stand on them.

producers who give their mates the session (for the earn), rather than hire musicians who can actually play..

unlablled files, takes 3 hours to work out what they are and spot them in, then the client complains because you billed them for it..

drummers who play hats really out of balance with the rest of the kit.. they always seem to have ugly clangy cymbals which they play with stupid fat sticks.

the girlfriend that comes up to you when you are soundchecking the drums and says she can't hear her boy friend.. he plays the sax and isnt even on stage...and that other friend of the band who comes up 5 seconds into the first song of the set, no sound check , u know the story , and says some dumb shit like I think the kiks not loud enough...

enough bitchin...

The pianist who slams the sustain pedal & releases it by pulling her foot off instead of raising it & then complains vehemently about the pedal noise when we're mixing. The same one who doubles her volume when any other instrument is soloing & then complains that the piano tone is wrong during the solos. The same pianist who to date has never failed to have her cell phone make an featured appearance in every recording I've ever done with her & then complains bitterly when I can't get rid of it. This in spite of the fact I've always told her the ringing was on the track when the take was over & she insisted on using that take.
(The same person brought me some tracks a friend of mine recorded for her saying he did a terrible job, the tracks were all distorted. It was her leather jacket, that she refused to remove, squeaking while she played.)

The singer who after hearing & loving a mix asks if her vocal was in a seperate reverb from the rest of the instruments & threw a fit when I told her it wasn't.

The mix projects that come in with massive, note by note volume automation written by the client that I'm told can't be changed even though the tracks are in no way balanced as a mix.

Another mix project on which the recording levels vary from -40 on some tracks to the lead sax never going below absolute saturation.

The guy who calls & has to have an instrumental track for a song he recorded over a year ago ASAP, then doesn't come pick it up even after I call him to find out why he didn't show when he was supposed to come get the mix.

All of these have been this week ........

Not so recent annoyances:

The mix jobs where everything is Audio1, Audio2, etc., & the files are spread across several drives & a laptop in multiple Digi LE sessions that I have to locate & then allign since none of the sessions have the same start point.

The band that comes in & rehearses for 45 minutes & then stands around & then talk & play standards for an hour & then tell me it's not fair to charge them for the full time since they only actually recorded for about an hour. No, these weren't kids, they were full adult, gigging, musicians.

The guy who wanted to book 2 hours to record a 7 piece band & just before I hung up on him, he informed me he would not pay for any set-up time or the piano tuning.

Sorry for the whining, it's been a rough week & I've been up all night with a sick kid.

Well, the kid's still up & I'm in no better humor, so here's more.

Steve, have you never heard, "No good deed goes unpunished."?
Almost every time I've done favors it's taken for granted that this should be the norm.

Land speculators: We have across the street from the studio a home on which stands the oldest largest oak in the metro Atlanta area, & an empty lot which a developer bought & has spent the last two years trying to bypass the tree ordinance laws through lawsuits, bribes, & trying to kill the tree by illeagally cutting off several limbs, spiking it, & finally pouring acid on the base of the tree. This stopped when I gave the people who own the land the tree is on a survielance camera they mounted on their house with spot lights trained on the tree. We've sponsored 3 benefits so far to try to help them pay their over 40 grand in legal expenses.

People who break things in the studio & don't tell any one. This includes the intern who during a late night session some how burned a hole in the floor of the main tracking room. He pulled a rug over the burned spot, set the alarm, locked up & left. Not a word to any one. I came in that morning to overwhelming smoke & went nuts trying to find where the fire was.
I'm not an ogre about this, last week an intern dropped a U47. He told me immediately. All I told him was everybody's gonna drop something sooner or later & at least he got his first time over with, don't worry about it.

The clients who book full days & want lunch breaks to be off the clock. This is just fine until it hits the point where they come in an hour late, work for 3 hours, & then want to take a 2 hour lunch break.

Clients that only book 3 to 4 hours once a week, but call multiple times a day to talk about what they want to do during the next session.

The singer who brought in great musicians from New York, started the session several hours late,(around 2:00 AM) & recorded roughly 14 hours straight & then at the end of the session when I told her the difference between her deposit & the balance due unashamedly informed me, "I aint got no money!". She later passed me a bad check & then took off for Chicago for 3 months. Finally the drummer on the session who had recommended me to this artist heard what was going on & paid me what she owed. (There are some good people in this business.)

New rule, no more church jobs. The last three that have booked, all three I had to change family plans, or go back into the studio because they said it was an emergency & this had to get done that day, they pulled a no show. Three different churches. No show, no call, no nothing.

Well, my wife's up now, she's got the bug too, but this means I can get to bed.

Steve, I feel your pain with regard to almost every one of the items on your list.
My version of the copper-stealing bums is that the galvanized-steel-intentionally-oversized-downspout behind Gravity has been stolen (by bums for the scrap metal) 4 times over the past 13 years.

The only one everyone has forgotten:

1am you grab and guitar pedal -- no battery.  So you look for 9 volt.... nope.  So you open up you chorus pedal (that hasn't seen use in over a decade) -- no battery.  So you open up a third pedal ----- zilch.  Then you think outside of the box and locate the milkcrate with 14 unlabeled wall warts -- and the fun continues....

A&R people who run into the studio and start bashin drumkits,or playing chop-f@ckin-sticks on the piano. Or even better, who sit a few feet away during mixing talking on cell phones about their new car and ask if the music could be "turned down a little" 'cause they can't hear the phone properly.

Wow, this is a pretty impressive list of gripes! Yeah, I guess that's why I never really sought out to work with others on recording/ mixing/ mastering. I've done it for the bands that I was in, and that's about it. I always just wanted to learn the stuff so that I could make my own recordings better by constantly learning how to do things a better way.

One band that I was in, we were making a demo, and I had a tube mic pre running into the actual mic input in the console, right? So the drummer starts getting into it, and telling me "well, you're not getting any sound". I said "we are. Look at the meters on the console, they're at the O dB mark". He says, "well, the input is turned all the way down, let's turn it up". I said, "the input is already turned up all the way on the tube mic pre. You're gonna get clipping if you turn the one on the console up". Him: "no, the input isn't turned up".

So it eventually escalated into an argument, and I quit the band. He's one of those guys that fall into the "pretends that he knows what he's on about, and then wastes people's time blowing smoke as to what he actually knows" thing that someone else listed here.

Food related:
People who show up early, waiting anxiously as I eat my breakfast.
Overhearing someone in the band say "I just picked up a bunch of fruit and snacks so we don't have to stop everything for dinner."
Eating meals in the control room, with its stink and mess.
General:
People who have a bad case of OCD.  The kind of person that will freak out at the slightest hint of imperfection.  I'm talking insane stuff like if I raise the control room level, the change in volume causes this person to start freaking out.  I'll hear that person barking "was that me!? did I fuck that up?!"  then sprint to the booth to punch what he has convinced himself was wrong.  That same person, for 10 hours constantly questioning everyone about his performance oblivious about what else may be happening.

The annoying girlfriend (or the male equivalent: the boyfriend who took a course in engineering once).....

I was helping out a friend who's a very shy vocalist.  After hours of building his confidence and comfort he was starting to really sing and the takes were keepers; he had grown accustomed to the idea that he wasn't being judged on every note and that there was nothing he could do that was wrong.

And then his girlfriend shows up, tells him the vocal tracks sound like absolute crap, makes him feel like shit and DEMANDS tons of reverb in the controlroom while he's tracking in the booth.  So I did the only honourable thing.  I secretly turned off his cel phone, put my keys to the studio on the console, told the other producer to carry on, and invited her for a smoke break out back.  And as we walked out, I closed the one-way steel security door behind me, thereby locking us both out for the evening.  No studio phone, no doorbell, nowhere to hang out, no more problem.  The vocals tracked later that night were superior.

And I hope that his next record is a break-up record.

Now, when I work on music, I enjoy it.
Of course, having the option to only work on music I want to work on helps as well.
And if it becomes a complete wank fesat, and the artist tries to treat me a sif I were they're bitch, and owe them something because they think they're they're so fucking cool and talented, I simply remove myself from the project.
And I rarely EVER work past 6 anymore.

I heard the album you did for The February March recently.. sounds great!  The boys had nothing but good shit to say about you!

Now, back to the regular programming.... (sorry for hijacking)

I think I rarely forget why I do this job.  I just got finished listening for the 4th time tonight the mixes I worked on all day.  Even when I'm working with assholes I make them be the only ones to suffer their asshole-edness.  I certainly try at least.  The one thing that works great is a set block of time.  If I like the band, we hang out late.  Otherwise I can kick them out.

I just read this post for the first time.  Whenever I drive down Belmont and glance over at Electrical I think... "I wonder what the fuck is going on in the big empty lot next door."

Now I can see clearly...

Tape wrapped around the mic was already mentioned of course, but there's another annoying place where people shouldn't use tape...

Mic stands. A stand twists a bit, or leans, or slips slightly, and -instead of looking at the mechanism for three seconds and seeing how to correctly correct the issue, they wrap duct tape asound the collar of the stand to prevent it slipping... or wrap tape around the clip... or half-dozen other places on the stand.

Of course, they take the tape off three days later when drums are finished, but the sticky goo stays on the stand and jams up the clutch, or other part of the mic stand which would otherwise work much better without the glurge gumming it up.

Honestly... for a simple instruemnt, the mic stand is a massively misunderstood device. -Of any ten assistants selected at random, I reckon that only about three understand how to correctly tighten them... the the rest resort to tape, and before long half of your stand collection is gummy and sticky and won't work properly...

THAT's only one thing that makes me mad... don't get me started, I'm such a curmudgeon...

I personally get annoyed when I get a stubborn turd that keeps me on the toilet for 15+ minutes, and then when i finally give up and go to wipe i go through 1/2 a roll of toilet paper 'cause the lil bastard keeps slowly peeking out like a turtle head, taunting me, laughing at me.

We have some Suretape P-672 which doesnt leave any residue, of course its $20 a roll, so instead of complaining about tape residue, I'm sure it will be replaced with overuse of tape complaints... Laughing

The same sticky tape that you shouldn't put on mics or mic stands works wonders to keep unwanted turtleheads at bay.
