I've search all over for answers and it is still unclear to me so i figure i'd ask! What is an Omni Input or output. Whats the difference between an omni and a regular output or input. When do you use it? Why do you use it? And who uses it?

Nice surprise about this shorter form. Can you tell us what it is you are talking/writing about?
Has any info. about this shorter form been posted before (and i just missed it)?

I'm sorry alyssa im not exatly sure what the heck your saying hahah.

are you referring to the omni outputs on Yamaha digital desks? If so they are universally assignable outputs to be used for aux, bus/group and matrix outs as well as insert outs and direct outs. They are "floating" outputs you may assign at will and are a way for the digital desks to interface with the analog world without expansion cards. Or are the Omni's you are speaking of existing on another piece of gear?

that's exactly what was talking about cool! okay. so its like a matrix. I just don't understand what its for..
-
it is for whatever you tell it to be for! they are (pardon the poor grammar and bastardization of terminology) a sort of omnipotent/omniscient/omniversal output on the console.
You decide how you want to use them, totally your discretion. As mentioned they can be any of the following:
aux/mix output path
bus/group output path
matrix output path
insert send
direct out
more? memory is failing....:)
Omni Inputs are the same just for inputs....
insert returns
stereo line inputs
fx returns, etc.

Ahhh that's awesome! Wow thats so cool I never realized that, hmm, thanks so much for the help!

of course brotha! glad it was something I could help with. ;)

M-Audio also sold an Omni I/O. for use with a delta 66 and delta 44 recording cards. It can be used with the Quattro USB also.
This is the microphone preamp and routing for the Card.

It's marketing jargon. Like what the meaning of the word "is" is.

that's exactly what was talking about awesome!
