Title: Bruce Jackson dead
Post by: Rick O'neil on February 01, 2011, 10:40:06 PM
Bruce died in a self piloted plane crash  , his body was recovered last night Sad

although Bruce was re-known for being  the live  sound guy for Elvis, Springsteen and Streisand

I think  Bruce would be the first to blush but it is worth noting his incredible contribution to the world of mastering .

he started a little digital company called Apogee - right when we all needed it
invented a little thing called uv22- dither  as well as the uv-100 super cd encoder and so much more in the world of converters and digital interfaces
the  whole apogee purple thing is all him ...
and of coarse pow-r was his gift to his competitors as he was leaving the digital market  for a long period

I have spent some short  times with him  recently - truly amongst the smartest people I have ever dealt with  and  so gracious

I Chaired  a Tech panel at a trade show recently  Bruce was the star "tech type " along with Wes dooley ( aea)  and Joe malone (jlm audio ) and a few local guys

and Bruce was so full of wonder that his early digital work was remembered at all
"i almost had forgotten i did that stuff " he said
"its hard to get perspective sometimes "

Sad day for me today  - i dunno about you guys   but if you dont know about Bruce i think you could do worse then find out about him

because he was so famous in the live world  and he left the apogee company to his wife ( Betty)   in a divorce  you wont find too much press linking his contributions to the mastering world - it was pre internet
but this guy made some of the  real "game changer devices "
so much that follows nowadays is just  new stuff

sad day

Sad indeed.

I believe he was also instrumental in the early days of Fairlight, helping Kym and Peter build a box that people actually liked the sound of...

RIP

Cheers,
Tim

Truly saddened, on hearing this.

A true Aussie Icon to us, here in Australia and the world over..
Highly intelligent and a very humble human being.

God Bless. Amen.

Sincerely,
KAyo

RIP Bruce.

Wasn't he the 'B' in dB Technologies? I still use those DAC's daily...

Different Bruce. Bruce Jackson was one of the great FOH mixers (Elvis, Springsteen, Streisand...) and he founded Apogee Electronics. A great loss.

Ah, I knew of his work as an engineer and Apogee, but couldn't recall if it was the same as the dB Bruce.

Regardless, agreed, big loss.

Thanks for the clarification, Dave.
