Title: record pressing

So I just did a project where the band wants to release a 7" vinyl single. I've never dealt with any of the record pressing companies, so I figured I'd ask. Who do you guys use? Anything I should be aware of, from a mix situation? Advice?

i've pressed 2 7"s myself (in '98 and '01), and here's what i found:

a) erika records. (98)  thicker, sturdier vinyl.  a bit more expensive.  i had ok/questionable customer service, but the guy i worked with, i think is long gone.  this was mastered by john golden. www.erikarecords.com

b) united records. (01) 7-11 of pressing plants and can do it all in one. it was mastered in house.  vinyl is flimsier than erikas.  it's also cheaper.  mastering job not so hot. pretty decent customer service, and had this really nice southern hospitality thing that us northerners fall for really easy.  www.urpressing.com  

if i were to do it again, i'd go back to erika and have golden master it. hope that helps.

i didn't record either of these, so can't advise mixwise.  my guess is if you go with a good mastering engineer, you'll be fine.

i've never heard of erika, but i concur on the united opinion given above

also check out paul gold for vinyl mastering.....he's in NY....

i would not take pressing plant in-house mastering
have a pro cut the laquer for you, it will be way better.

John Golden has done all our mastering for vinyl, great job every time.

i just don't dig it.......

if it's a rate thing, or "look who he's worked with" then fine.

i'd contact paul and see if he'll demo something for you....sorta hard to do on vinyl, but i'm sure he could cut you a CD to check out his work.....

I know a couple label guys that like Bill Smith Custom Records, supposedly offering a thicker vinyl than most places...

As far as mastering is concerned, definetely check out Paul Gold.
John Golden, I've never been a big fan of the sound of most of the records he has cut, which may have nothing to do with his mastering...

For jackets/covers... Dorado Press is damn good.
