Title: Backwall Diffusors for my Studio
Post by: Mika on June 21, 2011, 01:51:48 PM
Hey friends

I just finished the build of 1 from 2 QRD P13 Diffusors for the Backwall of my Studio in Frankfurt Germany.
The reason i build these Diffusors is, that i have a lot of engineers in my room, which are used to the sound a typical LEDE Room, an for make it more easy for them to mix in my Studio, i will build some Diffusors for get them this Sound.
Here are some Pics of the first finished Diffusor with a Designfrequeney of about 550hz.

Looks nice. What formula did you use for the well depth and width? What's it made of?

Mika,

I'm curious why you chose to vary the width of the dividers... I don't see this very often.. Nice looking unit. What it is made of (and covered with)?

Mika,

I'm curious why you chose to vary the width of the dividers... ..........
Hmmm... I guess that he vary well width, and not have dividers at all ... order of diffuser may be N=21 (which isn't a prime number, btw :o but 11 is prime number... ummm... he possibly vary dividers too) ...I may be wrong, of course.  ;D

Reason for this is possibly to avoid lobbing/aliasing at wavelength where lambda/4, lambda/2, lambda, 2*lambda, etc... are equal to well width (if we have it constant)

Anyway, we can wait Mika to explain.  8)

p.s. diffusers looks nice, really :)

Looks good Mika. Nicely built.

So you will place these in front of your back wall trap or insert them within the trap?

Hi friends :)
I will try to answer all your questions.
This Diffusor is a prototype of a low, low budget Diffusor, which should be possible to build without any big tools, like special saw`s ........
So i looked for proper materials which can easyly be used for such a projekt.
I found some nice wood pannels, which are used in bookshelfes. The had a measurement of 800mm x 200mm x 16mm ,  so this was the frame i had to work with.
I decided to use the cheapest styrofoam with 50mm thickness, and 10mm styrofoam for the dividers. After serching the best Sequence for the Diffusor with QRDude i found out that there is not enough space to make all dividers the same, so i played around to find a good looking sequence, wich fit into the given frame. After glue all parts together i coated them with gypsum, to nget a bit more mass. After that i used some nice Wallpaper to give them the final optical tuning.
I payed about 80 ,- for this 2 Diffusors, and have a lot of material left to build some more diffusors.
The Type of mounting is not clear now. I will test, move, test, move test, undtil i have the best measurment i can get with this parts.
I also build some more diffusors at the moment. 2 x QRD P11 without dividers as a flutter free solution at the back sidewalls, and today i start to build 2 deep skylines for covering a part of the cloud short behind the mix spot. So i will post some more pics the next weeks, and show you all the progress, with the "NO Buget" Diffusors i develope at the moment.
cheers

I think that using some water based coating is a cheaper way... or I'm wrong.
Diffuser firstly needs hard surface...  weight is second, and not primarily needed.
Gypsum isn't needed, also wallpaper.. try to find better quality styrofoam.

hope this helps :)
