Anyone found anything better / more consistent than the TY silvers? About half of the TY silvers I burn are failing in Plextools, growing weary of wasting my time with these...

Yah, I have several Plextors hanging off the DAW - similar results on all of them.

i had a bad batch that i ordered about 5mo ago (need to re-order, down to my last few)
white topped, 1 outta 5/6 burned with C2s... thought it was burner... switched them.. same results.

I'm also using TY white tops.
I've had to experiment with various burning speed before coming up with ( what I taught was) a decent result.
Burning at x20, .6 to .8 average, and 12 to 16 max
Anything above that ends up in the junk pile.
Since using TYs, never had a master rejected by a duplication plant

Free shipping and they offer to replace bad discs. Probably a good bet.
I see they also sell medical grade CDR's. They are supposed to store medical data guaranteed for 100 years. Haven't tried them though.

The "regular" TY's (printable, plain 'ol) have been horrible -- Same thing. Bad, C2's, etc. Sorry I even ordered some although I only use them for refs.
The main discs I've been using are the TY Water Shields -- Those have been fine - so far. Consistently good stuff.

FWIW TY white tops here burnt with SADiE/Plextor Premium II.
Never had significant problems with the media save for the occasional (perhaps once a year) 'solid C2' disc which I've assumed to be the start or end of a batch run.

TY Silver discs burned at 8X on a Plextor with Wavelab 6. No problems so far (knock on wood).
We have a GREAT distributor who we buy from http://www.thelittlewarehouse.com/.There are still a lot of reject TYs floating around that some places are selling as the "good stuff" when in point of fact they are rejects from Plextor. I guess it is good for their bottom line but I don't want to use something that I cannot trust.
We use a lot of Sony CDs for listening copies and they were always reliable but recently we have been getting a lot of errors. Maybe they switched manufacturers???

Yep we've had dicey results with Taiyo Yuden for the last coupla years, with both silvers & whites.
Didn't someone predict this when JVC came on board?
Sometimes a batch is good, below 1.0 C1 errors, more often from 1.0 to 2.0, but within spec.
Then a rare bad batch rears it's ugly head, even a random few bad discs within a good batch, it's a little puzzling.
Can be a real time waster when on a deadline crunch, especially with longer projects that require a wall-to-wall burn on the disc surface.
A real shame that quality control seems to be slipping with TY.
A far cry from the halcyon days of yore!

So is it inconsistent dye coating that causes the problem?
Or a rotational balance thing?
I even had a batch where I had to manually smooth out the plastic in the center hole to allow the burner to grab it properly.
I'm tempted to try those pricey Green Tune CD-R's strictly for masters to see if they yield any better results.
Or probably the Water Shield TYs...

Yes I recall a set giving C1's of 1.5 / 2.0 or so, but that is still very good compared with some of the trash there is.

This recent batch fails in-house QC roughly half the time, no plant rejections.
The worst part is most of the discs have physical issues - when you visually inspect the disc you can see scuffs, discolorations, etc...
I'd happily pay a premium for discs that someone actually cares about manufacturing properly.

Yah, I might have to try those out. Time wasted cutting coasters more than offsets the premium price.

Seems like they go for $5-7 each correct?
If a client is spending say 1500 on mastering, what's a fiver on a good disc!
I know a few years ago, we kinda made fun of the pricey Green Tune, now we're taking a second look. ~<(:-])~

More likely, they aren't sold in bulk, because they can charge more for singles. TYs have been fine. For the past 20 years.

I've had great luck with the JVC re-branded TY from Meritline. They are the "premium" silver tops. I'm about halfway through a spindle and have only had to throw out 2, the rest have given excellent results. I use a Pioneer for burning and a PX-716SA with Plextools.

Just a quick update.
I burned a couple of (recently acquired) TY Water Shield masters today.
One tested C1's at 0.5 and the other at 0.6 in PlexTools.
Much improved over the previous batch of regular TYs.
I assume that since the Water Shields are more expensive, perhaps they are an older run of discs, before the JVC arrangement.
And the DiscPainter label looks really nice.

To repeat myself from an earlier post there are a lot of TYs that are NOT first line TYs floating about. They are being sold to distributors as seconds at a reduced rate. Unfortunately a lot of unscrupulous dealers are selling them to an unsuspecting public as the real deal with first line prices. These are the ones with the cosmetic defects and the high error rates. TY never wanted these to be out in the market place as first line goods. They were the rejects that TYs quality control had rejected. I don't think this was a good plan for TY to undertake and they should never have been branded as TYs but the genie is out of the bottle and we all have to be more vigilante in who we buy from. FWIW and YMMV

Same experience here. I just got some JVC labeled ones.
Incidentally, TY bought JVC's blank media division and not the other way around.

I've been getting the Green Tune CDRs from VA Media. They are the main US supplier, from what I understand. The price has come down to the three to four dollar range.
The reason they don't come in bulk is because of the delicate/abrasive coating.

Yep, the "silver" ones are more like a "transparent white" -- They look absolutely fantastic with heavy ink coverage, but the plain glossy-white ones look better with simple text & line art (IMO/E).

fwiw - I got a couple bulk spindles of 100 each of unbranded JVC/TY silver ink-jet printables from http://www.meritline.com a few months ago that have been performing as expected (BLER averaging under 0.8/second - no C2's, no CU's) with no problems of coasters at all beyond maybe one or two at the top and bottom of the spindle.
Digital file only orders (usually sent as cue+wav along with a link to my Sonoris DDP Player OEM) and/or DDP master being sent to the plant have been steadily increasing for a while so I haven't been going through discs as fast as I used to.

Yah, I probably only cut physical parts on about 30% of projects now - virtually no reference discs any more. I like the trend, it makes sense, but I still need something where I don't get C2's on every other burn. What a colossal waste of time!

Samplitude and JVC (ty) discs. Just as good as my previous TY silver tops.

I haven't tried it personally as Plextools still does what I want, but Erik has a good track record with this sort of software so it would be worth trying if you need error checking with a newer drive.

This came up on GS a while ago. I asked if it was less wonky than Plextools. The only responder said it was more wonky than Plextools FWIW. For $25 I might give it a shot. I have a new Windows 7 computer I'm getting the puzzle pieces together for. I'd like to have that capability on that machine.

Paul - are you sure you're not confusing this with Plex Utilities? Erik wrote CDSpeed which was absorbed into Nero's burning suite and renamed Drivespeed. For political reasons Drivespeed's error checking tools didn't work with Plextor drives but did work with a wide range of other drives. Any wonkiness would probably have been down to the drive's hardware rather than Erik's software. Erik also coded the earlier versions of Plextools but left Plextor to join Ahead Software before the versions with error checking came out.
You will probably still need a drive based on the Sanyo chipset to take full advantage of the error checking which means an older Plextor or BenQ drive. I get the impression that the newer Mediatek based drives (like the Liteons and new Plextors) aren't as reliable for error checking.

Optidrive was the software I was asking about. Plextools works fine most of the time but I have both LE and the other one installed because sometimes one works and sometimes the other one works. It stays in a state that lets me "Restore" it to start it. If I "Restore" and try to run it I have to restart the computer and it's a crap shoot on whether it will work at all. I have to close it and "Start Plextools" to have it work. Not terrible but it required an ahem learning curve.That's what I meant by wonky.
I have a few old Plextors on a shelf.

I think I still have about 250 of my TY's of choice. I think I should order more soon.
In reality, I'm just waiting for DDP's to be accepted everywhere. i think I deliver most of my masters as DDP's now, which is great.

I've been using the watershields a few years. They have dropped slightly in quality, not in the general numbers, but in that in each pack I get a few that give me C2s which is very tedious.
When I first started using them I never saw a C2

I think I've gone through at least two spindles of WaterShields without a single C2, and C1s running very low. IME it's much more possible to make coasters of them by some screwup with the inkjet printer than anything in the discs themselves.
And the WaterShields do look great when printed on.

Last November, 2010, I stocked up on a few 100-spindles of non-descript silver Taiyo Yudens from U-Line. These are consistently giving me C1's in the .4/sec to .6/sec and no CU or C2 that I've seen, yet.
Burner is a Plexwriter Premium-U. Discs burned from Soundblade, Sonoris DDP Player, or Waveburner.
