Title: Regarding your mic setup, GM (as pictured on your site)
Post by: Synthia on April 28, 2004, 03:45:01 PM
Hello, all.

George, I wanted to ask about your approach with the overheads in this pic:

http://www.massenburg.com/cgi-bin/ml/tracking_mics.html

Specifically, can you please comment on their difference in height as well as their angle towards the kit?

In general, what is your method for placing overheads?
What are you listening for when you're out their tweaking their location?
How does the angle of the capsule factor in?
Do you tend to pan them hard left and right (or allow for that possibility anyhow)?

Thanks mucho. Love the new site.
Syn

I watched (with interest) Tommy Vicari doing drums recently.  How he did his overheads reminds me a bit of what I see here.  Based on watching Tommy, and reading about George's concept, my guess is:
Overheads are equidistant from the center of the snare
One overhead orients to the right hand's cymbals
One overhead orients to the left hand's cymbals
