Title: new u47 fet grill basket repair advice
Post by: afterlifestudios on August 30, 2016, 06:49:13 PM
My new fet 47 was in an unlucky spot when a drummer's rack tom stand toppled over. The mic still sounds fine (the session is still in progress and nothing has changed sonically.). But the top (the roof) of the mesh is now dented in. Does anyone have advice on repair techniques or replacement or just let it go?

Undent the top screen from the inside of the head basket by tapping a wooden cooking spoon or other rounded wood implement with a mallet, until the basket's original shape is back. Nothing more to it.

You get access to the inside of the head basket by:

* unscrewing three Phillips head screws that attach the capsule head to the mic body
* turning the head upside down, unscrewing three small slot screws which hold the capsule assembly plate to the head basket
* keeping the head upside down, carefully lift up the capsule assembly from the basket with smooth cheek pliers gripping
   one of he two contact blades
* reassemble in reverse

Thank you Klaus.  That worked great.  Unfortunately, we also notice something loose rattling in the amplifier section.  Are there tricks to disassembly to get the amplifier out?  (This is a new production version of the fet 47).  In the meantime, I will check if all the pads and the roll off switches are functioning correctly...

Thanks again.

Oops.  I spoke too soon.  Upon reinstalling the capsule, the rattle is gone.   Still curious to know about disassembly and removal of the amplifier section.

Still curious to know about disassembly and removal of the amplifier section.

After the head is off, there is one more Phillips screw on the rear of the amp that needs to come out. Once it's out, you can pull out the whole amp from the amp housing by grabbing its three white nylon clamps as far as the lead-out wires to the bottom connector allow. Then you unplug the black bottom connector from the amp board, and remove it completely.
