Title: WUMP 26 ( Discussions & Techniques )
Post by: KAyo on January 14, 2013, 10:48:43 AM
Ello ello!

This is where we explore the MUSIC!

We'll keep the discussion ON, here. Some of us prefer to throw in the "techniques used" early, in the conversations and some prefer to walk us through the experience.

Express, as you see fit.

 ** **  ** **  ** **  ** **  ** **
Personally,
I have always been fond of the slower ballad.
Great melody overall , also the band and all that good stuff.
Finding the mix a tad.. too hot!

Nonetheless, I can't wait to hear what some voltage packed boxes and some digi juice from the group, is going to do to this beautiful track.  :)

Cheers,
KAyo

Strange ..nobody's uploaded any masters yet!
Unusual as that may be, we'll soon see an influx.

Deadline 25th January 2013.

Unfortunately, 2013 has been far too crazy to get started on this. Hoping to find some time! I love these things.

I should know but .............. what does WUMP mean?
Title: Re: WUMP 26 ( Discussions & Techniques )
Post by: KAyo on January 23, 2013, 02:20:57 AM
Hi Rick,

A quick synopsis of what WUMP means to us all here, participating in the mastering jam-up.

WUMP is a project where different engineers master the same mix, comment each other’s work and share what they did, and why and how they did it.

The purpose of the WUMP is to demystify mastering and help each other become better engineers.

Participating in the WUMP means, that you:
- make the best master you can in ten day's time.
- upload your master close to the deadline.
- into the WUMP FTP folder.
- download and comment on the other masters of your group.
- post what you did to the mix, to attain the master etc.
- discuss the outcome as a collective.

There will be no revisions. Period.
____________________________________________________

Hope that helps
Cheers,
KAyo

PS: Someone will chime in with the meaning to the abbreviation/ acronym of WUMP!

It may be a bit early, but mine is going up now (I worked on Yaar) and will be available shortly.

All the best with your entries everybody, looking forward to hearing what's been done.

Thanks ggidluck.

I concur. Sure it's foreign.. but the melodies, universal to us all.

Not only, but, especially true for mastering engineers. When you find something in a song (through repetitive listening) that moment, that suddenly comes together and brings out the true nature, the melody, the realized meaning, the craftsmanship and .. *BOOM*, we recognize and appreciate that captured all encompassing moment! It's joyous!

The ending to SAI, did that to me. Real cool and earthy. Fond of that end.
Hopefully, some of you felt that sublime ending.

Keen to hear the gangs work.

Cheers,
KAyo

Will upload mine tomorrow, also did YAAR.

Just a thought, wouldn't it be better to have the two groups according to which track we mastered, this time? As opposed to being randomly chosen? I guess that is, if we have enough entries for two groups. Probably thinking ahead too much! ;)

Can't wait to hear all the entries!
Title: Re: WUMP 26 ( Discussions & Techniques )
Post by: KAyo on January 24, 2013, 12:04:36 AM
Hi Babaluma,

We did think of that .. but, as both tracks were offered to the group, and not knowing who took which one as a preference; we can only tell, once the person let's us know, on posting their choice/ review/ master.

So the pre-conceived group wasn't possible.

The dates, closing in people.
I will upload SAI, sometime tonight.

Cheers,
KAyo

Did mine last week; just been waiting for 01.25 but looks like others are submitting early so I will do the same. Will be uploading both tracks.

The PM didn't mention it, but since the tracks were used for film I assumed that the preferred format would be 48k/32 bit. However, I went ahead and converted to 44/16 JIC since that's what we normally do for WUMP. So, which version are we "supposed" to deliver?

Thanks.

Well considered. Done both too. Well done!
If you have 44/16's, that would be perfect.

Keen to hear them.

One more to 'cop out'.
Fell ill with the flu this week and couldn't finish it.
Not that I wouldn't mind working with a fever but having a nasty cold doesn't yield proper results sonically.

Not a problem..
As an example, you can do both groups in one posting:

SAI Group:

Master 2
Master 3
Master 4

YAAR Group:

Master 1
Master 2
Master 3
Master 4

Name  RMS  PEAK
KAyo -14.9 -.3
Very good!  I like the way the presence come out in the voice and accordion (or accordiojn like instrument), but it may be a trade off with the lack of fullness in the low mids.  at the end it opens up nicely on the highs especially in the stereo info.
LudwigM -14.3 0.0
Very good!  Maybe pusihg too close to the digital ceiling. . .
OTRM -14.7 0.0
Nice.  I feel like i'm missing some clarity in the mid range and upper mids and also missing a bit of the impact of the kick drum and low end transients.  also pushing a little too close to the digital ceiling. . .
GGidluck -15.1 0.0
very bright!  way too much on the top for my taste.

YAAR
Name  RMS  PEAK
Hynes -17.8 -.3
very good.  you didn't trim the front or end?  i like it a lot. probably quieter than most clients would prefer, but very good.
mmarra -13.5 -.4
you didn't trim the front or end?
OTRM -14.7 0.0
nice.  maybe could have been a bit more open in the upper midrange.
Lowland -14.2 -.2
quite a bit of clipping and crackling going on.
Babaluma -17.1 -.3
very good.  probably quieter than most clients would prefer, but very good.

there are my notes and first impressions.

Hi, the SAI group

This is what I discovered, after a speaker and headphones listen.

LudwigM:
The tone of the master shows an assured character.
The drum smack felt better. Low/mid/high shared a snug fit. Un-fatiguing high mid work. .kudos there.
The RMS is on the heavy side. A tad dark, and slightly mono in vibrancy.
Enjoyed it nonetheless!

OTRM:
Opened-up and freshened up the low-mid and mid work. Broad and big, fills the room! Sturdy body, though a touch overzealous cowboy RMS.
Emphasis on the mid tone sculpting some fatigue is felt.
Likewise, perhaps tucked in tight, clutched too firm with a whip of over mono darkness.
Still, well done!

GGidluck:
If it weren't that high octane bright and over sprite. It could have been a clearer attempt to listen and judge.
Could be monitoring, perhaps a revisit is required.

As always, thank you for the jam-up.
Will post the technical stuff, shortly.

Cheers,
KAyo

Although the songs weren't quite the full-on slabs of sub-continent I’d hoped for but more ‘international pop with ethnic elements’, they’re fine pieces in their own right, well recorded and performed: thanks very much for providing them, KAyo. I listened to the mastered versions, and when I looked at the notes I’d made I found I was in pretty much complete agreement with BiigNiick - please let his comments also stand as mine.

The most beautiful sound for me was that of Michael Hynes, though the majority of my clients, very few of whom are loudness freaks, would want significantly more level. My overall favourite by some way was BiigNiick’s version of both tracks, which I thought had nicely judged level, dynamics and EQ while retaining more than a passing acquaintance with the mix – well done.

Although I hadn’t thought about it before I signed up to this WUMP, it struck me once I heard the original mixes that there would be little point in just doing what I do every day: while a ‘conventional’ run would be in a similar region to the majority of offerings here, I felt like moving out of the comfort zone for a bit and trying something new. EQ was fairly normal: a little brightness added with the BAX, pulling back a slight honk in the vocal region via the Great River MAQ-2NV and tailoring the low end a bit more, but then I used two compressors in series, something I rarely do, and with in one case an unusual (actually, never used here) setting.

It seemed to me that Yaar, my chosen track, could do with more density, so the signal went through a Foote mastering compressor using the Nonlinear mode which allows slower transients through while reacting quickly to faster ones; following that I had a pair of Chandler LTD-2s where the settings were more for vocal control. At the time it felt as if I was achieving the goal I set, but I suspect others may not feel the same way!

Not to worry: if nothing else I’ve learnt about the context in which something doesn’t work as well as I’d hoped, and in mastering where we’re typically dealing with relatively small moves for me that can be as useful as more positive knowledge.

Thanks everyone.

Sorry for being a bit late! Here are my techniques and notes...

First of all, thanks once again to Kayo for providing such great tracks. Really great stuff!

TECHNIQUE:

When voting I chose Yaar, because I'm a huge Reggae fan, and this track had a wonderful Reggae riddim, so that's the one I really wanted to master. I absolutley love this track! For me, the most important thing in Reggae is that unquantifiable groove or feel, so this was my main focus in mastering it. It has to make you want to bump and grind. The vocal is obviously leading the track, so this was the next main focus.

I thought the mix was great to start with, but knew I could probably bring out some more clarity, space and groove.

The file went straight from the DAW to the RME to the Crookwood transfer DAC to the Chandler Germanium Compressors with no pre-processing.

I set the compressors for a deliberately "strong" signature, by using the "Dirty Comp" setting (adds quite a lot of second harmonic distortion. I don't normally use this setting in mastering, but was going for more of a 70's Reggae vibe, and felt it suited the track well), and using the "Germ Medium" curve setting, which has quite a sqidgy/chewy charcter. The side-chain was set at 300Hz, so that none of the bass frequencies were causing the comp to clamp down. This hopefully left the bass sounding big, fat and natural. Ratio was at the lowest setting. Attack pretty slow, and Release quite fast, set to enhance the off beat bounce of the riddim, for added toe-tapping-ness. The Output Gain and Feedback controls were set for a slight low end boost and a slight high end roll-off, one of the more "coloured" settings.

Next it was into the Pulllet EQ. Here I slightly boosted at 2.5kHz with a medium bell to help the vocals pop. I cut a little with another medium bell at 500Hz to reduce mud/enhance clarity. I added a shelving boost at 15kHz for air. That was then sent to the Chandler TG2 preamp for 40dB of make-up gain.

Next into the Bax EQ. HPF at 30Hz and Low shelf boost 1dB at 74Hz, this combination of settings gave me the Dub Reggae style bass presence I was after, without being too flabby. I cut 0.5dB with the high shelf at 18kHz, and also added the LPF at 18kHz. The combination of these settings with the Pullet shelving boost gave me an enhanced high end without slicing your ears off.

This went to the Crookwood capture ADC/RME/DAW combo. I clipped the converter about 15 times in each channel throughout the song. This gave me a little loudness, and meant I wouldn't have to apply so much limiting later. I used Voxengo's MSED to reduce the gain of the M channel by 0.4dB for a very slight stereo width enhancement. I liked how it sounded on the percussion and effects, and the combination of this reduction, with the Pullet mid boost in the vocal, sounded great.

I then took the captured file and ran it through Voxengo R8Brain Pro to SRC from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz, with "Extra Steep" and "Minimum Phase" filters, and set for "No Clipping". I imported this file back into Audiomulch for Limiting with Voxengo Elephant. Input Gain 1.9dB, Output Gain 0.3dB, 4x Oversampling and El Uni algorithm, for a maximum of 2dB of limiting, with no overs or ISPs. Finally I used Sonoris Dither to go from 32 bit float to 16 bit fixed for the final file I uploaded.

NOTES ON YAAR:

 -0.35 dB   -10.54 dB      5:05 WUMP 26_mmarra - YAAR
-0.29 dB   -14.76 dB      5:05 Wump YAAR Michael Hynes
 -0.11 dB   -11.12 dB      4:52 WUMP26_BiigNiick-YAAR
 -0.20 dB   -11.15 dB      4:51 WUMP26_lowland_Yaar_44_16
 -0.04 dB   -11.74 dB      4:52 WuMP26OTRM-YAAR
 -0.33 dB   -14.06 dB      4:51 YaarGreggBabalumaHermetech

Also in agreement with what has already been said regarding levels etc., it is always a personal choice when client gives no instruction on loudness. A few masters were showing ISPs, so I would be very interested to hear what any of you think about this, if you think it's a problem or not etc.

mmara - Nice, warm and loud

Michael Hynes - Clear and wide, went for similar level to me

BiigNiick - Fantatsic, "enveloping" big sound, was very interesting to read your process

Lowland - like the tight bass on this one, lots of ISPs

OTRM - Sounding good, although I fet there was slightly less clarity in the lower mids than some of the others

Thanks for this WUMP, it is always very enlightening to see and hear what others do!

All the best,

Gregg

Thanks for the comments. This flu did catch up with me and so I have been slow to get my listening and comments done.

I did want to echo what Kayo said about benefiting from the WUMP exercise. Two people commented so far and both said my master was bright. I guess I knew this. Since previous WUMP's I have moved to a new room and I am using cubicles and have dampened the back wall, as well as added bass trapping in two corners. I think maybe that overall there are not enough reflections so more work needs to be done to get things right.

I think I am getting the low end about right, just still grappling with how much on the top. Probably the fact that my hearing is not what it was when I was 20 is a factor too.

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment.

Here is what I did, for SAI.

This time the NEVE Masterpiece II > into the TCMD3.

Midrange mass retract work. High range to tape blending for more cohesive high range.
A light compression, negligible limiting, if any.
Working the Vocals as a guide, led to most decisions made. Kept it broad stroked.
Gain seeking via Air Montserrat Input/ Output modules. The masterpiece, graces well at this task.

Playback Workings via Wavelab >> RME 800FW

into the FabFilter Pro-Q plug >
Low Cut: 33hz
1204hz > Gain 1.8 > Q2.0
180hz > Gain -1.4 > Q0.71
69.6hz > Gain 0.8 > Q0.80
4800hz > Gain -1.2 > Q0.40
High Shelf: 22.8Khz +0.3

into the Masterpiece II >
Input Gain 3.0db

1515 EQ module
2.2khz > Gain 0.8 > Q2.0
310hz > Gain 2.5 > Q3.5

Tape Texture
Mid + High
slopes @ 200hz & 1.2khz

1900 Compressor Module
Mid and Low band only
Threshold -5db
Attack 50 mS
Release 500 mS
Ratio 2.1
Soft knee ON

Output Gain 1.1
HPF 30hz
LPF 12hz

>> RME 800FW >> Capture 44.16
No Dither

TCMD3
Normalization
Expansion
Dither 44.16

Done..!

Thanks to all.
The Bollywood WUMP was very interesting, to say the least.

Late with my comments, but here are my overall impressions on SAI. Listening on Lipinski L505's and a tuned sub.

All entries very good. Easy on the ears and not harsh. Most entries seemed to take the track a similar direction.

Biig Niick: Sub frequencies seem a bit too much. Could be some room excitement here. At least from my perspective. I trust that the full-range monitors and larger room comes into play there.

LudwigM: Nice smooth sound overall. Good tuning of the lows and nice top.

OTRM: A bit too much when the kick drum hits. Very close but for me I would have to low-shelf it down ever so slightly.

Kayo: Very good overall. Lows sound about right to me. Good midrange loudness and top very evident but not harsh. In the clapping section I was thinking this is very nice.

Good job guys! Great work. This was a great track to work on.

My process for YAAR is as follows.

Logic playback into Metric Halo Mio console.
Mio stereo EQ: + 0.3 at 955 HZ  Q 0.89

Foote P3S ME
135:1 in RMS mode with HPF engaged hitting at a couple DB max...

ULN-8 A/D with Mio limit soft knee just for overs..

Flux Elixir Final Limit (which BTW I did not hit near hard enough!) I never send out stuff this soft!

As For My Brothers....

BiigNiick. I quite liked the overall level and the track in your hands has a lot of impact.
I feel that there is something in the 8K region that gets a little strident and perhaps
a little to much 120HZ for my taste subjectively. Really strong work!
Lowland.  A lot of energy in the upper mid and 3-5 K-ish. Perhaps a little aggressive
.

OTRM      I love how the vocal translates in this master. Very nice overall. The high end
is present but not hard sounding.(my esthetic ) The low end is very nice in that I can
feel both the first harmonic of the kick and a connection to the fundamental of the
lead vocal if this makes sense. This track feel integrated a pleasing way and at
a good level. I think my favorite!
Babaluma Feels a little shy in the 350/450HZ area and a little hot in the 1.5 to /3 K region.
Again good work but a little scooped and bright for my esthetic.
Mmarra    I like the midrange treatment a lot in this version. My only comment is I feel
something around 105 to 120 that could be slightly tighter subjectively. really
              strong work!

Thanks folks!

Michael

Thanks Michael.

Foote P3S ME
135:1 in RMS mode

My goodness me! Then I saw the '3' on the numerical part of my keyboard is right next to the '.'

I"ve been using the Foote on electronic dance material of late, first time I've really got into the attack and release controls (A/R mode) - fab! However, RMS is the choice here most of the time (often between 1.2 and 1.5:1) and works very well.

Aha! Holmes here thought it was 1.5:1, glad I mentioned it - always interesting to see what others do with equipment in common.

For the Yaar mix that I mastered I used the following in sequence and I worked all ITB:

- Nebula ATR-102 30ips tape sim
- Brainworx BX_Digital EQ in M/S: +0.2 db @ 82 Hz mid; -0.3 db @ 117 Hz mid; -0.2 @ 5.13 kHz mid; +0.3 @ 345 Hz side
- Softube Passive EQ in M/S: -1 db @ 1.5 kHz mid
- SPL PassEQ: +0.3 @ 26 Hz; +0.68 @ 20 kHz
- Magix Ammunition compressor: about 1 db of GR in the mids, 750 Hz to 4 KHz
- Brainworx Eysia Alpha compressor: about 1.5 db of GR with sidechain at 125 Hz
- Softtube Vari compressor: about 0.5 GR over the mix
- Mid Gain of -0.4 db
- Sonnox Limiter: enhance at 80%
- Fabfilter Pro-L: Output at -0.30 db, Gain = 1.88, Oversampling = 2x

My overall goal was to smooth out and push down the vocals a bit. Also I wanted to give the track a bit more low end since it had that reggae feel :)
